FOR WHAT WILL WRKO's JULIE "THE EXECUTIONER" KAHN GIVE THANKS?

there was a Star Trek marathon on TV LAND all weekend. They should've superimposed Julie Kahn's face over the Ricardo Montabaln figure a la Demi Moore as Meredith Johnson in "Disclosure", terminating the files as she tried to get Michael Douglas fired for sexual harassment she committed. Sounds like just another day on the Howie Carr show.

Radio is a business.
Julie has convinced David Field that she knows how to operate the business.
If he is unhappy with the success of her portion of the business, she will be left on the street with the others whom she put there.
If the people whom she put on the street have talent and value in this industry, they will be picked up elsewhere. It may take time, and it may be hard on them short-term, but despite a shrinking industry, there is still room for talent.
And, the no-talents are eventually discovered.
My point? Unless you can convince David Field that you can do a better job running Boston, it is not productive to attack Julie, because you lose credibility. Question the wisdom of her decisions? Sure. But, you stoop to the level you put her on, by attacking her.

Ruined the lives? Seriously!?! Engaging in hyperbole are we?

Here's guessing that if you spoke to Rod and Listo, two happily married men with families that love them, they would hardly tell you their lives are ruined. They are unemployed, yes, but so are the majority of posters on this board.

If you want to have a serious talk about the state of radio have at it, but lets not make this into something its not.

We get it. You hate WRKO. Hardly a mystery. But Julie Kahn and Jason Wolfe did not kill these people, or their families, friends, or anyone. They laid off a handful of nice, hard-working people. GM and Ford did it to about 20,000 such people within the last year.

Ruined their lives? You should be embarassed.

As someone who has been on both sides of the desk....having to fire people due to various unique demands of the business, and being fired for many of the same reasons, you come to realize that that's life and that's business.

Life knocks us down. Boohoo.
When we're done crying, its time to get off our A$$ and make our life even better than it had been. Radio stations are not charities, and as employees we are mercenaries. Anyone who still expects a company to be loyal to them, needs to wake up.

Uncle Arnie is right in his sentiment. Losing your job sucks, but the most important thing is health and a loving family. Talented, motivated people can get another job.

The human race is long, and there are speed bumps along the way. If you can accept that, you'll be much better off.

what a crock. When the Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed the corrupt corporations to buy up all the independent radio stations.

If you do something creative - interview name artists on Public Access and get your interviews syndicated internationally, resulting in appearances on the BBC and VH-1, corporation shills or jealous weekend jocks will extend their claws and attack your hard work.

It is an unfair industry that doesn't foster talent. Indeed, the less talented people are, the more corporations will embrace them. They don't want creative people who might "rock the boat".

Talented guys like Rod Fritz and Listo Fisher should worry - when they've been canned at Christmas time by clueless hacks that ruined their radio station, and with younger faces coming up and willing to work on the cheap, talent doesn't always win out.

Have dealt with people with "short person syndrome" before and it isn't pretty. "Shorty" Wolfe must be no exception.

For the posters on the previous page and their condescending "it's just business" diatribe, let me say I agree. It is just a business and being fired, especially in the entertainment business is to be expected. Part of that business is also being ridiculed, especially when you're in the public eye. Particularly when you fire people right before the holiday season, betraying your lack of character. When the only real success you have in a cluster is one station WEEI and the women, in this sad episode, being belittled had absolutely nothing to do with its success. So we'll keep on belittling them and they'll keep on firing people. It's the seemless natural way of the world, so take the abuse you dish out.
 
IMO: Cume is a PD's number. Time Spent Listening is the host's. What does a PD care if people tune out everytime the hack news comes on. It is the host job to get them to come back, while the PD can hide behind his cume and say, "I did my job. I got them here. You didn't hold them." ::)

So to be clear: if you disagree with the notion that WRKO is the embodiment of everything evil, than you must be Julie, Jason, or employed by Entercom?

Here's an alternate idea, just for the fun of it: maybe, just maybe, there are some of us that exist in the real world that believe that radio is a business, not some idealistic empire that exists beyond the bounds that regulate the rest of the known universe.

Simple fact that everyone seems to agree on: WRKO, as constituted a week ago, was a hugely unsuccessful station that was trending even worse. I think everyone would also agree that a talk station needs good talk show hosts to succeed and WRKO doesn't have alot of those to go around.

So how would keeping the news department make the hosts any better? You hated the station before, right?

Please, someone, anyone, throw out one constructive idea of how they would fix this thing. Casablanca hasn't done it, Panago hasn't done it, Varulven certainly hasn't done it (but he did enlighten us with some something about "name bands" that, well, really has no bearing on anything does it?).

Come on guys, have at it. What would you do?
