FORCED ANTENNA HEIGHT CHANGE ?

I remember hearing some time ago that an FM radio station in the New York found out that their antenna was too high after someone complained about interference to another station, and may have been forced to reduce its height or lower power. Does anyone recall that?

There was an issue a decade ago with WFMU over in New Jersey - the coordinates that had been specified on its license way back when turned out not to match the actual coordinates for its longtime site in West Orange on First Mountain, and so it was putting a little more interference toward WFUV on 90.7 and co-channel WSHU on 91.1 in CT than it was supposed to be putting out. Some sort of settlement was eventually reached, and my recollection is that WFMU ended up not having to reduce height or power after all.

Scott, you may be right but I think MarcB is on the right track too. I seem to recall an antenna somewhere in Long Island was found to be way overheight and the owner had to drop it down in a hurry several years ago. I don't remember if was 98.5 though, but that might be what the OP was asking about.

Reducing power would always be quicker and easier.
Why move the antenna?

Party 105 had moved to a higher antenna, but "forgot" to reduce its power. It was in 2003-2004. There were reports of regular reception in Nassau county, and deep into Connecticut. I do recall hearing Party 105 nearly static free on 95 from east of Norwalk to New Haven.

I should have included a ;) or a 8) or maybe even a

Too late to edit my previous reply so here are better links. They're both NALs for $5,000 each. Of the two, WBON was the more interesting "mistake". The license was for the antenna to be mounted 40 meters above ground level but it was actually at 114 meters. No wonder they got out so well.

Damn, no wonder I would pick them up in Elizabeth at the time.

Sure enough, I even wrote about the situation in NERW back then (Nov. 11, 2003):

Two eastern Long Island radio stations have some explaining to do to the FCC. It seems inspectors were checking out the Manorville tower that's home to WDRE (98.5 Westhampton) and WXXP (105.3 Calverton-Roanoke) about a month ago, and something didn't quite add up when it came to the antenna heights for the two stations. Jarad's classic rock "Bone" WDRE is supposed to have its antenna 40 meters above the ground, but it was radiating from 114 meters up; sister dance station "Party 105.3" is supposed to be at 90 meters but was spotted at 132 meters. The stations have until Tuesday to explain what happened and try to avoid an FCC fine over the matter.

What was the outcome?
