forced on him??

I hear 'rko p.d. job was forced on wolfe because of budget cuts, he didn't want it..

really shows, doesn't it??

This isn't the first I've heard this. As the story goes, Jason would have been more than happy developing the sports product for other potential stations within the parent company. Entercom told him they "needed" him at RKO.
Disclaimer: the person I heard this from could very easily be tying do do a little face-saving for his pal Jason.

>>>could very easily be tying do do a little face-saving for his pal Jason.

how though?? 'rko's damaging wolfes career, isn't it??

I expect he got a nice raise, which would have been made bigger by well performed "I don't want this" lines.

Do you have any idea how much money Entercom wasted on the six months Whitemore was there ? Whoever it was that brought him in and spent all that money..should be taken to task for being a bad manager...fired and never be allowed to set foot in a radio station again. All it did was set the tone for what you hear today. A two bit, poorly programed WEEI satelite station.

julie kahn did that...

Even in its early days WRKO had marginal PD's. Charlie VanDyke was a great guy to work for but his real love was in music and voice overs with his great voice. Mel Miller, well, the less said the better there. Still, with the powerhouse lineup RKO had in those early days - Jerry Williams - David Brudnoy - Norm Nathan- Gene Burns and others -the station really didn't need a PD. Paula O'Connor was a marked improvement. She has an actual communication degree which may account for her longevity and success at WTTK.

Wolfe is at WRKO when they don't have the players who by their very talent can make a success of the station. As I am sure he is now well aware, sport talk jocks are interchangeable and actual talent on sports talk is less important than the status of whatever professional sport is in season. In a sense, sports talk is self sustaining.

Issue oriented talk is not and without outstanding talent behind the mic a PD really needs to know what he or she is doing. Obviously, Jason Wolfe does not.

I have no problem with Jason Wolfe; in fact, all my kidding aside (piling on the short jokes just because Casablanca started it), I have to agree that it sure seems WRKO is cutting the budget by having him do the
"Tony Berardini will take both WBCN and WZLX before we push him out the door in our lateral move...

Wolfe was overseeing a successful operation. As difficult as The Big Show's Glen Ordway is, the show is a success - as is the station. I'm not happy with what they program outside of Dale & Holly (Dale & Newmy, Dale & Eddy, Dale & Oedi, take your pick) - Ted Nation was good in his day, and went sour quicker than a quart of milk on the picnic table on a hot summer's day, but the reason I listen is for:

a)The Red Sox
b)Good pre or post Patriots talk

The Celtics and The Bruins, to me, are very minor. The Soccer team is NOT on my radar screen unless
there's a cute photo of them in The Globe. Not kidding - my only interest in the soccer team (can't even
remember their name) is how good looking they are.

So there you have it. I'm not the listener WEEI is looking for anyway...

WRKO should be looking to bring Progressive listeners onboard. Is Jason Wolfe equipped to try to boost the
ratings of the Talk Station because an automatic WEEI looks good on paper? It doesn't appear to be the case, but the jury's still out on him. I think Julie Khan is more responsible at this point in time for WRKO's problems. They were in place before Wolfe got the job handed to him.

We can criticize WRKO all day long; the basic problem is that they are playing to Bush's base in a blue state.
Methinks they need to make an effort to get progressives to tune in. Marjorie Claprood and The Dorothy Vigue Show with the other lady (The Daughters of Two Chicks Dishing, if you will) certainly can't do worse
than DePetro. Anything is better than Feinburg & DePetro - but is Jason paying attention, or are there
problems at the Sports station we don't know about taking his eye of the RKO mission?

>>>WRKO should be looking to bring Progressive listeners onboard

don't you get it?? ALL politics are going away now, haven't you been listening??

by the way, 2 recent comments (not by me) on the Mass. board at conservative site Free Republic:
"Did anyone happen to catch Steve Baily and Alex Beam (from the Globe) on the 9 am timeslot on WRKO yesterday? Ick. I really wish WTTT would get a stronger signal. Their lineup is quite good!"

"I heard a little of beam & baily yesterday while in my car. I then switched over to that 1150 station. I'll leave it there from now on. Who the heck is making decisions at the 2 big Boston talk stations? They must be on drugs."
(I assume he means WTKK for the other one...another post referred to Jay as "flip flopper extraordinaire")

One other comment: "Who needs progressive talk when we've got 96.9....half progressive all day."
(Barnicle, E&B, maybe even Severin lately...)

What do I listen to? Howie. Ingraham. That's about it...

Idea for Clear Channel--put on a host who's desparate for work now (he'll take anything at any salary)--he'll be sure to get listeners all riled up, especially because he probably disagrees with your core audience...he'll
get people to notice your station(s) because what he says will make big news.

The time is now.
He's tanned, rested, and ready. John DePetro on Boston's Progressive Talk* :)

*--so he has a voice not exactly perfect for radio? Heck, WKOXKS has been running Al Franken for 2 and a half
years! :)

Paula O'Connor has made a mess of 96.9. Its a station that survives on the strength of one host, just like another talker in town. When one of these stations decides to start trying, the other one is in deep sheet. Why all the focus on WRKO without hardly any mention of the sleep-walkers who thought Michael Graham would be the next Severin? Where is the moaning over the horrible Barnacle show - another writer doing lousy radio? Why isn't she taken down a notch or two for keeping Imus on?

problem with 96.9 is that there's lots more to listen to on the FM band, thus, many people tend to ignore them.
It's like having two WRKOs in town.

Raccoon, your suggestion for DePetro on Progressive talk is ludicrous. There's too much "conservative" talk in this Blue State. The core audience would tune out (all 500 of them) and DePetro has zero numbers to bring with him (exhibit A, his petition), they'd be better off getting a feed of the Gene Burns program.

I was making the DePetro suggestion as a joke but consider this: even at the nadir of his ratings, his
show got twice what 1200/1430 was getting in the 12 +s** :) (And yup, 'RKO had a better signal...factor that in, I guess.)

**--OK, admittedly I'm using "average rating for station as a whole" vs. "one show's ratings", so...

Want people to "know about" WXKS
and WKOX? What better than:

>>DEPETRO IN NEW CONTROVERSY
Boston Herald January 3, 2007
WXKS/WKOX talk host John DePetro is in hot water again; on his very first show at
Boston's Progressive Talk, he said that...

See? Free publicity! Note also that I was saying that at this point he'll work for anyone, and if
they're willing to give him minimum wage to do a local show, even if from a diff. viewpoint...

>>96.9

Again, if not for Ingraham I wouldn't tune them in...took a bit of Graham but couldn't get into it. Thankfully
it'll be Sox season eventually so I can listen to them instead.

By the way I think I mentioned in another thread that the new WKLB website for some strange reason
(at 3 am today) listed the jock on air as "Laura Ingraham"! Apparently fixed; now it says "Country 102.5 Weekends" (generic but more accurate)

RE: DePetro's ratings - when I was at WCGY Steve Becker told me that WBCN could go dark for three months and still pull a "3" share. That was back in the early 90s. DePetro's "ratings", such as they were, benefited from RKO, not from what he brought to the 9 to noon shift.

What were his ratings compared to McCarthy & Vigue?
compared to Pat Whitley?
compared to Two Chicks Dishing?

anyone have 'em?

DePetro was a bad experiment. Was it Rich Carberry and - who was the P.D. at the time - Mike something or other.

depetro and his ratings. Question: what are the ratings of the show before him? How come nobody writes about the rko morning show?
I find it hard to believe RKO "is cranking except for 9-noon. Depetro was new to boston. What did RKO do to promote him?
I don't know anyone who listens to 6a-9a on RKO, so there is no way they are pulling ratings there. As far as whitley, please.
I am not interested in a 70 year old man or what he thinks. I think depetro would have done great at RKo with a better lead-in or the type of publicity he generated from this story. Do you think WEEI would be a giant if d&C were ranked 20th in the morning?
What happened to BCN 10a-7p when they lost stern and put on DLR?
A new host doing the 9-12noon shift is suppose to explode in the ratings when the show before him is going down out of the top 20?

It could be because no one is listening so they have nothing to write about.

good point. SAM is a less talented host than Depetro, but since he's not edgy and offensive he doesn't motivate much interest here. SAM in the morning is a much bigger travesty then Depetro was! give wrko a good morning show and all its (relatively minor) problems are solved.
