I was listening to the Doors Box "The complete Studio Recordings" and reading the micro-booklet notes , and read that we are approaching the 40th anniversay of the death of Jim Morrison July,3rd, 1971. He is a dubious member of the "Forever 27 club"...rock stars that have died at age 27.

It all started with the death Brian Jones of the Stones and snowballed with Hendrix, Joplin and morrison.

Dead at 27 amazing list of stars:
1. Brian Jones - Stones ..7/3/1969.....accidental drowning by valet per deathbed confession.
2. Jesse Belvin - Singer Goodnight My Love..car crash feb 1960
3. Rudy Lewis - lead singer of the Drifters..may 1964..drug overdose
4. Malcolm McHale - Spanky and our gang oct 1968 ...carbon monoxide from faulty heater.
5. Robert johnson - Blues Singer ..strychnine poisoning...Aug 1938
6. Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson - Canned Heat...drug overdose(Suicide????)..sep 1970
7. Arlester "Dyke" Christian----Dyke and the Blazers... shot,,mar 1971
8. Linda Jones - R&B Singer ...Diabetic Coma ...mar 1972
9. Ron "pigman"Mckeran -Grateful Dead .....fell off a horse and died from injuries...mar 1073
10. Jimi Hendrix - asphyxiated on vomit...sep 1970
11. Janis Joplin...heroin overdose ---oct 1970
12. Jim Morrison - "heart failure" no autopsy....jul 1971
13. pete ham - badfinger ----hanging --april 1975, joined club by design some speculate
14. kurt Cobain --Nivana---suicide by shotgun..april 1994..also joined club by design they specuate.

about 20 more from various groups

Yesterday Singer Amy Winehouse join the non-too-exclusive Forever 27 club.

From msnbc:
Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive habits overshadowed a distinctive musical talent, was found dead Saturday in her London home, police said. She was 27.

Very sad.

I cringed when I found out that she was 27 because I knew that there would be attempts to lump her in with all those others, and sure enough, there have been. ::)

Yep, people love to make those macabre comparisons.

maybe she and "curt cobain" can laugh at the old Geezers.....but wait they are all 27. The attached, is my favorite Amy Winehouse video "Back To Black", very retro "Nancy Sinatra" meets
"The Shan-Gri-Las"...Forever 27 club is Elvis' favorite hangout. My wife sez I live in the past, she said you will be forever 27...I replied "I should be so lucky..."

There actually was a news report today on one of my local (Chicago) TV stations on "The 27 club"-- videos with Hendrix, Jones, Cobain, Joplin, etc.

Her gimmick and act were not quite my cup of tea, but she was a pretty little thing...and had quite a cult following.

I am doing a 1971 40th class re-union this week-end , I noticed many of the forever 27 club members are on my playlist.

didn't want to start a new subject......... there is alot of irony in this name:

Jani Lane, the 47 year old former lead singer of the rock group Warrant, was found dead in a Los Angeles-area hotel Thursday night, TMZ reported.

His real name is John Kennedy Oswald....... his parents have a wierd sense of humor or were paying tribute ?????

I think "weird sense of humor" is being kind.

Tuned in to the fusion channel yesterday to watch the 2011 rock n roll hall of fame show and they ran a half-hour show about the forever 27 club, just before the Hall show...started with Amy Winehouse and worked their way backwards....half format was to hurried..they just touched on each artisr briefly.

Hall Of Fame Induction nice..long over-due induction of Darlene Love the most famous unknown singer in history....Dr John, Tom Waite, Neil Diamond, Leon Russell and Alice Cooper(alice cooper intro by Rob Zombie was priceless) were also inducted

sadly, Leon Russell is not long for this world, he looked in bad shape, but he still got behind the piano and did his signature stuff.

The highlight for me was hearing Darlene Love sing "Today I Met The Boys That I am going To marry" and Her duet with Bette Midler on "He's a Rebel"......She's a class act thanking Phil Spector for her success, she lost a lot of royalties over her career, wheter Spector was responsible I don't know, but she thanked him anyway.
She was the "Crystals" on their first two hits, Boxx sox and Blue Jeans, The Blossoms, and her solo stuff and so much session work in LA..she is on so many hits recording ,too long to list...

i love this song....while I was watching your clip....I saw a clip, from I am guessing, Shin-dig, the real Crystals lipsynching to he's a Rebel...La La Brooks is going to town and It's Darlene voice coming out of her mouth..... Spector had to use Darlene Love because the real Crystals were still in NY..and he wanted to beat a competing version to the radio stations ,by of all people Vikki Carr...his version came out at the same time as Vikki's and her version died on the vine. Don't forget Al Pacino is currently filming the Phil Spector story, out soon on HBO. someone posted on the you tube clip that it was the Blossoms, I don't think the Blossoms had been invented yet..it was all session singers which included darlene Love and Cher LaPierre who at the time was the 15 yr old girlfriend of Spector go-fer Sonny Bono.

My Billboard Book of Number One Hits tells that same story, too, and they did indeed credit the Blossoms with recording "He's A Rebel." But I have found the occasional mistake elsewhere in that book.

Ironically Phil Spector wrote a lot of the material he recorded...except for "He's a Rebel" written by Gene Pitney..had he written It he may not have been in such a hurry to record and waited for the real Crytals to arrive from NY....even Whitburn refers to He's a Rebel as recorded by the Blossoms..since Cher was involved and she was not a Blossom, I think they retrospect the name the Blossoms which were formed after Bobee Soxx and Blue Jeans and bobbee soxx and blue jeans if i am not mistaken, were at the same time, or after the Crystals.
