Forever Memorable Announcers

I was thinking the other day about the radio hosts who long after they retired or passed on were always top of mind when the public talked about great/memorable radio hosts.

Two come to mind quickly. Spook Beckman and Irwin (Earlyworm) Johnson. For many people on this forum Johnson may not ring a bell as he retired in late 1969 or early 1970 and passed away in 1970 but for 30 odd years he was the morning host at WBNS. As the years go by, his once household name seems mentioned in fewer converstations but among us older Baby Boomers, we still remember.

A third possibe host would be Suzy Waud.

Bob Conners will likely join that club when he hangs up the headphones.

Anyone else think of others?

Some good suggestions. I would certainly add Jack & Dick. Wes Hopkins could be a good possibility.

J. Parker, while a great talent, wasn't here long enough to make an impact. I guess I should have been clearer in that I was looking for people who made their name in Columbus and became forever memorable in this market.

I would go with Maurice Jackson before Johnny Dollar or Jim Runyon. While Runyon became a huge star in his own right, he didn't stick around long enough to be a Columbus fixture. I know of Johnny Dollar but don't remember his airwork. And did he bring WTVN as PD to the place where it became the giant or was that more of Jim Lohse's work?

One other current possibility would be Daddy Wags. Been a fixture for many years.

How about the great Kirk Bishop from WVKO, One of the great voices i remember in Columbus radio

Another would be Mike O'Malley who did mornings on WNCI in the Late 70's Early 80's then on to 92X and finally WXLE 103.1

I lived in Columbus for a short time. How about the voices of WVKO's Frank Kelly, QFM96's Beth Kepple and Bill Pugh, WCOL-FM's Dr. Rick West and Mr. Tim Hodges, and John Fraim?

I can hear BC of course, but I can also harken back and hear the voices of Jack & Dick, Dave Logan, John Fraim, Spook Beckman, Wes Hopkins, Bill Patterson, Martin Petree, Bill Weber, Marv Homan, John Gordon, Steve Cannon and George Lehner that are the standouts in my listening memories.

How could we forget the host of Byers Bandwagon? ;)

Mu first memory of the bandwagon was with Gene Fullen hosting. When Gene passed away, the baton was passed to Dave.

If I recall, the my first memories of the Saturday line up went something like this:

John Fraim til 10 am
All nighter du jour from 10 til 10:30
10:30 to 12:30 Byers Bandwagon
12:30-12:45 Paul Harvey
12:45 -2:00 Dave Logan
2-6:30 Bob Conners
6:30 til midnight Gene Warman

Not sure if the all nighter rode gain on the Bandwagon or if Logan did.

Gene Warman! I forgot about him!

I was a high school classmate of the late Joe (Gallagher) Ucker, who worked at WBBY and WTVN (briefly) among others.

Gene Warman. Worlds' greatest trumpet player. And nice guy.

Never met Joe. Used to listen to him on BBY, TVN and BNS. For some reason always liked his work best on BBY.

Joe was a really nice guy. We used to do "radio stuff" in a studio he built in his parents' basement. He passed way too young.

I recall hearing a British announcer doing car commercials on WHOK-FM in the 80s; I think he was advertising a Circleville dealership. Any idea who that might have been? I think it was for Thompson Motors or something along those lines.
