Forget WOGL. How about WPEN vs. WPGR?

Here's an interesting thought...

Hypothetically speaking, (if WOGL didn't exist) if Oldies 950 hadn't failed and if 1540 WPGR was still on the air...who would the winner be?

My choice...WPGR because of the REAL Philly favorites, the predominant 50's Rock and the DOO WOP...but that having been said...I think WPEN would score higher in the ratings because they were MUCH MUCH more mainstream than WPGR was.

Any thoughts? Also, does anyone remember how well WPGR scored in the ratings?

I just looked at some old clippings from Billboard for several ratings periods in the early '90s, and WPGR is not listed, meaning they were below a 1 share.
It was hard even then for an AM daytimer to do well with music. There was also WOGL-AM competing for a while at that time, too. Plus, WOGL-FM played a lot more "older" oldies back then, so it's hard to make comparisons to now.

Ditto.

I was working at a station with a library of Arbitron books. WPGR did not appear. As you say, signing-on at sunrise (meaning no morning drive audience during the winter) and signing-off at sunset (meaning no afternoon drive audience in the winter) means you are dead in the water to begin with. You totally miss the Holiday season revenue, so you really can't compete.

I enjoyed WPGR very much. But it really was never a real player in the "oldies wars" here in Philly.

WPGR anytime of the year was supported by local advertising that personally like the station regardless of ratings. If they thought it was worth advertising they would advertise. That's how it's stayed on for 15 years. Now if they would do it for WPEN and WAMS, and AM 860, 900, etc. AM would be king again.

By the way, WAMS has been Gospel music now for about a year or so, carrying the programs of their Dover station. With Gospel loud and clear in New Castle County on FM plus WDAS-AM and 1510, WAMS is not even in the game and never will be unless it gets an owner who knows how to run a radio station. But even then, there really is no need anymore for an AM station in Newark.

Re: WPGR

I have some airchecks I made of WPGR from the nineties if anyone wants to trade. I even have some Jerry Blavat from 1540.

I was only kidding about WAMS. This is how bad this save AM/WPEN campaign has gotten on this board. Once these AM stations sign off for good, I expect to read about many suicides in the Delaware Valley.
