Format change at Sunny 98.1/1550 am

Sunny 98.1/1550 am WLOR Huntsville has flipped from Oldies to Urban Oldies. They have picked up the Steve Harvey Morning Show recently left behind by the departure of Hot 103.5's sign off. Former morning show host/PD Ed Gains is moving to middays. I'm glad to see that Steve Harvey has found a new home in Huntsville. Does anyone know if they are broadcasting from their CP yet for the 98.1 translator?

No problem. Yea 98.1 has been on the air for a few years now simulcasting WLOR 1550. They were oldies as Sunny 98/1550 but have changed to urban oldies. Keeping the "Sunny" name but not really mentioning 1550 except for the legal. The slogan is "The Valley's Old School Station."

I have noticed the past few days WLOR 1550 has been off the air, but Sunny 98.1 is still on. Maybe a technical issue?

Could be a technical issue, but I think it's a much bigger issue that the translator is running without a parent station to feed it. That's against the rules if they haven't filed for an STA (there's not one in the FCC app list) and it should be shut down. Not that it has ever stopped unscrupulous AM operators. WJLX in Jasper ran their translator alone while the AM was off one at least a few occasions, but nothing was ever done about it. They never filed any STAs, either, that I'm aware of.

Funny thing about WLOR, even though it's supposedly 50 kW during the day, it doesn't have that impressive of a signal because of its high band position, but come evening it really gets out for a while. I've heard it in Kentucky on I-65 just south of Louisville before, and it was a regular dial presence in central Mississippi when I lived there. Seems like I've heard it a few times down here on the gulf coast, too, a few years ago.

I think the rule is if the am parent goes off the air for more than 24 hours, the translator has to turn off as well until the parent am is back up right?

Agreed about WLOR's signal. For a 50k am it does have a rather small signal in comparison to typical 50k am stations. It's still probably the best am signal in Huntsville though. I see the CP for the translator at 98.1 has infact been completed and license to cover has been filed. Not a bad signal for a translator and the new old school format is fun to listen to.

Having lived on the east coast of FL, I was used to hearing stations from the Caribbean up to New York on a regular basis, even in the daytime due to the salt water paths. However when we moved to AL I found it hard to hear stations outside of Huntsville that are in Ardmore, Florence, Scottsboro or even Decatur due to the poor ground conductivity. Some of the better signals around Huntsville on AM are WSM in Nashville due to the 50 kw and efficient antenna, WVNN, WBXR, also come to mind... Also another observation is it seems like there is more tropo in the summer months on FM here so there are different opportunities for listening...
