Format Change Coming To 105.9 The Edge?

In the not too distant past it was widely reported that CC was not happy with the return it was getting from WBIG, and a few years ago it was a pretty solid rumor that BIG was being shopped to Red Zebra. Nothing came of that. However, it does indicate that something could happen.

Then there is CBS. It's well known that CBS is starting to swing their FM's to News and/or Talk. I can't see them taking on WTOP, but there is nothing to stop them from flipping one of their under performing FMs to Political Talk. If CBS is willing to outbid Cumulus/Citadel for Limbaugh, Clear Channel will happily laugh all the way to the bank. If they don't think they can make more by keeping Rush for themselves.

Of course, when you deal with the big boys like CC, CBS, Cumulus, and Hubbard, the possibility of some serious horse trading always exists. No matter how it turns out, it appears that WMAL is approaching Darwin Time: Evolve or die.

Let's not forget another growing trend of late, in addition to news/talk and sports AM stations migrating to FM: the slow death of alternative rock stations (some of them notable former Howard Stern affiliates, and of course, most recently, the two that Merlin quashed in Markets 1 and 3).

Clear Channel could easily kill DC 101 and turn it into Rush Radio. But looking at how WMAL's numbers drop like a rock (no pun intended) at 3 PM, I can see why they'd be hesitant to do so...

At any rate, the Cumulus/Citadel merger is supposed to be official any moment now... As should be WMAL on 105.9 FM.

Re: BIG 100.3: with the way Clear Channel is popping out oldies/classic hits stations left and right these past couple of years (in markets like Columbus, San Fransisco, Portland, Seattle, Hampton Roads, St. Louis, etc etc), could we see BIG re-position from classic rock-based classic hits in to a more typical classic hits format that includes motown, disco, soul, new wave, etc. in addition to older rock such as WOGL or CBS-FM? Clear Channel did it with KJR-FM in Seattle, who had sounded similar to WBIG.

Classic Hits/Oldies has been on a steady rebound for the past 5 years. It typically does very well with PPM.

It's now official, Uncle Charlie approved the Cumulus take over of Citadel. Also DCRTV is reporting that there was a strange ending to this morning's Kirk and Mike show on 105.9 that is fueling speculation that the format flip to something else is imminent.
