Format Change In Columbus 104.9

Another oldies station bit the dust today. Oldies 104.9 is now 104.9 - The River. Wow...another Classic Hits station...

Wait a minute...isn't their sister station, Y106, also a classic hits station? I know Y106 plays edgier music at times, but from the looks of it, the music section on both Y and The River's websites are almost duplicates of one another. Columbus must love their classic rock/hits.

How has this affected Y106's formatting? Have they had to go more modern, a bit harder with their music? Just curious.

So how many "oldies" stations are left south of Indy? ???

Hmmm...even though 95.9 is all satellite now, they're still running an oldies format. Doesn't Bedford have an oldies station as well?

In my opinion, the term "oldies" is the real subject in today's radio environment. Honestly, Classic Hits IS the "oldies" radio of 2007. What has traditionally been known as Oldies(Big Bopper, Elvis, Temptations, etc) is becoming the modern day nostalgia format. If you think about it, the core of Classic Hits is mid-70's, let's take 1977 for example. A song from that year is now 30 years old! Definitely an "Oldie." That would make a fan of that song somewhere in the neighborhood of 48...still edging toward the upper end of the 25-54 demo.

Bet this format is more appealing to those who would vote for a Sheriff candidate. And..the news director WILL run a story on David Mann for Sheriff every hour before the next campaign.

Bedford, Franklin and WJCP 1460 North Vernon are all oldies. Franklin & WJCP are both on the same bird. WIFE Connersville is also oldies, but that's 50 miles ESE of Indy. Louisville has two oldies stations 103.1 & 103.5. The times they are a changin' & this 54 year old is feelin' the radio pain of bumping up against the 25-54 ceiling...OUCH! I've never heard the British Invasion referred to as Nostalgia...I knew it had to happen someday, but I'm just not ready.

I agree...Have yet to hear WERK Radio call themselves "nostalgia"...but that sounds too WHBUish(remember the organ player and that female singer daily at noon?)

Find somebody who can talk like Glenn West when he still owned PG in Portland...and throw in the Gary Hannes Waxworks.....now THAT's nostalgia

How 'bout simply "back in the WERK day" ( I remember "990 WERK" over thirty years ago)

Didn't they try that once before? As I recall, it didn't work.

That was for the mayoral race, if I remember right?

Oh, yes. That's right. It was for Mayor. Interestingly enough though, if we pay attention, Dave's presence will increase at White River Broadcasting leading up to the election. If I remember correctly, he hosted a segment on the stations about cyber crime just before the Mayoral primaries last time he ran. Still didn't help.
