Format Change (or Adjustment) in Asheville at 96.5

Passing through Asheville today, I heard liners on WOXL announcing that this is Asheville's Lite Rock Mix, the new Mix 96.5. I started a different thread about the format wheel at 1350, but WOXL has been almost as bad since WZLS went away several years ago. Let's see, WOXL started out as Oldies, then "The Best of the 60s and 70s" I believe, then the latest was "Classic Hits", and now Mix 96.5. When I was listening today, I could tell little difference in the music from Classic Hits. The only true AC song I heard was "Carolina In My Mind" by James Taylor. Here's their website:

Well, as much as I love classic hits/oldies, their programming of the format was horrid the way it kept changing and that southern rock stuff they were in to for a while. They were never consistent. Glad to see them starting over fresh. The site lists Rod Stewart, John Mayer, Kelly Clarkson, Celine, etc....typical soft AC, it looks like. Maybe the music hasn't been completely changed yet, knowing Saga and 96.5.

IMO, a smart move. Allows them to maybe steal some of the older listeners from WQNQ if it's regular AC (e.g. My 102.5 in Greenville), and even though they are out of market, WMYI and WSPA. Wonder if they will get Delilah or Tesh for nights.

Yeah, they need another soft AC in Asheville, with WMYI and WSPA breathing down their backs. Three ACs will be much better.

listened for a little while the last couple of days, and 96.5 does sound a lot like WMYI,WSPA,..etc "Asheville's Lite Rock Mix" just doesnt make it, and they play too many country sounding songs..better if they had migrated The River format to 96.5, I like that station but being on a translator it just doesnt have the power to make it out here to Marshall. 8-(

I'm sure they will end up with the same 5-9 share numbers. I hear there is much internal turmoil up there. The Mighty Saga!

WMYI and WSPA may cover Asheville, but they do not market themselves towards it. They are Greenville/Spartanburg stations. Try hearing many references to Asheville on either.

They kept the same DJs though. That is a little odd. I would start over with an entirely clean slate if I were them, that station has had so many changes over the years.

If the old airstaff can pull it off I say go with it. Sure beats firing everybody.

Is Chuck Finley and Sid the Surf gonna play Kelly Clarkson? That would feel like pulling teeth.

I am confused...I started to post that Chuck has been gone from WOXL for a while and is now at Hendersonville's WHKP. But, I look at BOTH of these stations' website are there are Chuck bios on both. Some wrong info here? Is Chuck working both?
