Rapking, I agree with you 100%
Power IS there to keep hot down and YES kiss needs to flip. I have thought KC 101 is the better top 40 for a long time. I think given the right marketing they would do very well.
They have better imaging better jocks and musically I think they are right on as a mainstream top 40.
What would you do with KISS if you were to flip it?
Power would do a lot better without that hideous Wendy Williams show. It is an immediate turn-off to a good percentage of their audience. Particularly the non-black female listeners, who probably make up 80% of this station's listenership. Hartford isn't New York and Power isn't WBLS. Different listener profiles. Actually, it amazes me that she works anywhere outside of NYC.
As for the KC-101 vs. Kiss debate - you all are forgetting one important thing: New Haven and Hartford are two different markets and are programmed as such by corporate owners. KC-101 is programmed with New Haven in mind and Kiss is programmed for the Hartford audience. Each market has different demographics and (to an extent) tastes.
Yes, the stations with transmitters atop West Peak can reach both - but they tend to emphasize (and do better in) Hartford, as its a larger market. I know that Kiss is up there too, and Kiss is geared toward the Hartford market. Only those stations with a fairly unique format (DRC comes to mind) see success in New Haven too. But, Hartford will always come first. Fact of life.
Yes, Hartford stations can do ok in NH - it is possible, but it is not their primary goal.
On the other hand, KC-101 will NEVER do very well in Hartford. Never has and never will. Too many reception holes and it has historically been too much of a "New Haven" station. No, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But, Hartford is a secondary market for them. Always has been. It's the case for all of the New Haven stations. Even WPLR, back when its rock programming was unique, was on the second tier in the Hartford ratings.
You simply cannot lump the 2 markets together as you're trying to do. If Kiss changes format, Hartford is without a CHR - its as simple as that. KC-101 is not going to be a reasonable substitute, at least not in a business sense.
