FORMAT CHANGE: WJNA NO MORE NOW WMEN-MAN TALK!

Today WJNA of basically the 70+ demo has changed format to a man talk and also their call letters to WMEN. With this change James Crystal has come into shakey ground with this move..it could be a huge success or flop. They have chosen a distinct lineup of hosts.
Here is the lineup:

The Mancow Show 6-12 (with last hour of highlights from the other hours)
this show could go either way..just like the station
Jim Rome 12-3
A little bit of a diffrent personality from Mancow..but i like this one.
Don and Mike 3-7
Good show...should do ok in PM drive
Tom Leykis 7-10
Rusty Humphries 10-1
Tammy Bruce 1-4

I would compare this station to a FREE-FM, which south florida dose'nt have.
Should be easier to pull in the $$
but major advertising will defently be needed to get this station out there.
I've got one problem..this station dosent have a Local show!!
We'll see what happens.
 
I'm not so sure about he money angle. WJNA used to bring in a decent amount of cash, most through the endorsements of Chuck Zink and Joyce Kaufman (and Rineiri back in the day).

Isn't all talk radio in general considered "Man Talk"?

Its all about the demos. with WMEN a man talk station advertisers will have a broader range of people to get their message out to..Remember Radio is a business and decent amount of cash isnt good enough if you can be making more.

A few months ago on this board we had a little bit of fun in here and suggested new formats (and even new call letters) for various underperforming stations in the market. I suggested flipping WMGE (94.9) to an all-talk format (which has been rather successful on FM all across the country). I even suggested that perhaps the new call letters could return to the heritage WINZ-FM (as a talk companion to WINZ-AM). Perhaps even 'I-95'.

The lineup that WMEN has put together looks just like a typical 'FREE-FM' talk format that's available in many other parts of the country. Perhaps Clear Channel should experiment with such a format aqui en el Sur de Florida ? We have all learned that what works elsewhere sometimes does not work here (and vice versa), but sometimes you just need to try something different.

well...if CC sells 94.9 to CBS...then and only then can we bring up "FREE FM" ;)

but CC DOES have a talk format in its ever endle$$ arsenal..real radio. i know they have it running for a while now up in orlando (104.1) and in north palm beach (92.7) (although i dont know if that's still around).

i think fm talk radio would be GREAT to have...maybe move paul young ron there..for mornings, then put leykis or mancow in the afternoons...maybe kenny walker's return to FM? who knows.

the longer 94.9 stays in the cellar the more we can talk 'flip'

Hello All! I'm new to this site,found it while Googlin'! :)
First of all,i'm VERY VERY dissapointed,i'm a sports nut,and can get my fix of sports on radio with 790 the ticket and wqam,
i liked wjna's format,i liked music of your life,(i still listen too moyl on the www)and believe me i'm not 70+!
I sent an email,and let james crystal know also by phone i HATED this switch!Jammin john summers oldies at nite were very cool,i think this is gonna lay a big fat egg!
I listened to Jim Rome the other day in My car,and he reminded me why i can't stand him! :'(
This inane idea of Talk radio Geared to adult men,is just as immature and dumb as Adam carolla's Man show was! DUMB MOVE james Crystal! Believe me,i'm not alone,the ratings are gonna go in the toilet!

I think this is pretty much a great daytime line up, especially Jim Rome! Man Cow may prove he can play out side of the Mid West with this.

James Crystal dosent care about how much you hate the switch...the matter here is them making $$$...and i guess it wasnt happening..they want to attract younger demos..

I hope it DOES NOT work out for them! ;D
I gave it a cchance listen to the dumb sophmoric inane humor,and found it tasteless and annoying.
Only time will tell if it pans out for them in the $$$ dept,my wish it doesn't!
This isn't No Korea,or russia,we have a choice in the USA on what we listen too,and i for one won't be listening to this station anymore!
 
Well, I didn't think it was possible to hear talk-shows that are more boring and stupid than the ones on Real Radio, but WMEN has done it! I never heard mancow before this week, and I must say it is absolutely awful- how does this guy have such a big-name in the radio biz?
Thank GOD they put Opie & Anthony on the Buzz in AM drive b/c otherwise I'd be back to listening to NPR- no slam on NPR but I prefer to have a few laughs on the way in to work...
 
Mancow has proved he can't play in LA, and Chicago was just a bunch of hype. And, like a typical bottom barrel operator, JCE has succumbed to TRN's pressure to clear Humphries and Bruce (a feminist lesbian on a guy talk station?), two shows which totally do NOT appeal to the audience, in order to save a few bucks on the Mancow clearance. WIOD gets lower ratings than English-language news/talk stations in almost an any other market... at least 610's programming is consistent. I doubt too many Leykis listeners will stick around for the D-list political talk block.
 
I think it was a pretty lame move. Just when I was getting excited to hear about them increasing their power. What a waste.

Imagine my surprise hearing "man" talk over the station I often tune in when driving on business in south Florida.

It's not like there aren't OTHER talk stations around.

While I was listening, I heard Chicago's IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW bleed through from some other 640AM. That was the kind of song that 640 likely played.

Again, shows you who radio's owners REALLY care about. Hint: it 'taint the listeners.

How much $$ I can make? -- yup!

Radio...this entire business...ain't what it used to be. But that's the way it is now. And if JCR can make more $$ with another talk station, rather than playing music for 70+ year olds, then I say "good luck!"

Most people under 40 don't know about AM and the rest don't care.

AM stations if they are lucky have the 50+ but they won't have them for long if they don't program to this demographic.

I know I've heard the story, nobody wants to buy the 50+ demographic. I never said it would be easy that's why you need SALES people not order takers. The problem is eveyone is looking for the big profit easy sell.
