Format Change

What station do you think will make a major announcement and a format change in the next thirty days? Still only a rumor but the rumble in the jungle is getting louder and louder with lots more talk going on among well know brokers. It is hard to keep these things under wraps.

OK, let's see. . . who's vulnerable? WKRR and WVBZ both could be candidates for change. I think the Classic Rock thing in this market has played out. More money could be made with those signals. But, what could they possibly change to? Could the market support an FM Sports station? What else is possible?
Then, there's WTHZ, when will it change hands and become Christian radio? And, someone could still do the FM Hispanic station, since CC dropped that ball, but the Hispanic stations are usually on imperfect signals. I've been pretty good at figuring it out before it happens, so I'm gonna be thinkin' on it.

Classic rock will always be around. Thats just the way it is. I doubt either of KRR or VBZ would flip anytime soon. The name of the game is money. Even if these 2 are underperorming now...and I haven't seen any Miller-Kaplans lately, there isn't much you can just FLIP T, and start making more money. VBZ is just a CC shell...why flip to another CC shell??? You know CC won't put anything into it. KRR needs to do some investing and thinking about their station outside Chris & Chris. They should promote the HELL out of the fact they're local and prove it by being out and about. For the longest time, C&C were the only jocks on the website. They have Ronnie Alexander listed now...but thats it. That's just a pisspoor job. At least the pics are up to date.

Since "Air America" has folded, maybe a station could establish a "Liberal Talk" format? It would nice to listen to the "other side" all on one station as opposed to changing the channels for the different shows. This is a reason why I enjoy "Rush Radio". Maybe 850 am could establish this, since they already have "Imus in the Morning"?

I doubt any stations will copy Air America's format.
Maybe they'll do some beach all week, and bluegrass on Saturdays [since the beach people are gone], and Sundays: polka!
You know who "they" are.

More talk and more localism is the only way for radio to survive the technology of the day. AM survived FM, AM and FM survived TV, but are today's owners willing to do what it takes to survive the iPod, satellite music services. etc.?

As usual Mike you are right on target. Why play the same music people can get from other sources, especially when you can essentially pick & choose the music you want. Most stations playing music ignore the other elements that make great radio such as what's happening locally, and a little bit of personality the audience can relate to. Most music stations are so boring running the same old tired slogans over & over & over. No wonder ipods are so popular. Of course when you've cut the staff to bare bones, its hard to create a local feel. The need for information doesn't stop at 9 AM which is contrary to all of today's programing theories. Too bad the computer that runs the programming isn't aware of what's going on in the community.

Wow, amen to that. The local feel of a lot of stations around here is gone now. In my opinion that's what happened to ESPN 980.

What is the old saying? What is old is new again? Maybe it is time stations start to do real local radio shows like in the 30's and 40's. Old fashion I know but maybe it might work?

You guys are so right! The only way radio stations are going to make it in the future is to offer better, unique content. MP3 players offer listeners all of their favorite songs without any commercials, so stations that try to go with music and no on-air personalities will have very little to offer most potential listeners.

At least talk radio shows offer something that you can only get on the radio. Heck, I'll bet even old radio-theater type shows would attract some listeners if they were done well.

This line of thought is both brilliant and ground breaking!!!! ::) ::)
APE could be both Lum AND Abner, since we's brangin' back cuttin' edge dramatic pronouncins on the
Freckenze maduladiums!!!!! :p :p :p :p :p :D ;D ;D ;D :'(

Who will fill the Oldies / Classic Hits void when Magic 94.1 is gone? Entercom gave up the format when Z93 became The Wolf, Clear Channel has already screwed up most of their stations in the market so it might be something for them to look at. WIST has stuggled with their legendary country format but they have such a signal problem in the Metro it may not be much better.

Don't touch my country!

Simon is sounding more and more like classic hits all the time. If they'd just dump the hot AC and the metal and alternative music, and rap if they still play any, they'd be there.

OH MY GOD! That makes a lot of sense, don't it? If they would only stop playing 5-6 styles of music, they'd have a new format??????????? Couldn't you say that about any station?????? If 106.1 Rush Radio would just add some songs several times and hour they wouldn't be talk???? Great work, Gov'nah!!!!!!!!!!! :p :p :p   :'( :'(

The point is some of us only want the old songs because the new stuff is mostly garbage.

Thanks chimp for the clarity and keeping us all on our toes.

I think chimpanzee and Big Ape are the same person, depending on whether he takes his meds or not.

I've never worked in radio.

The first email I ever sent had "vchimpanzee" on the subject line. It was to a radio station that, like Simon, couldn't decide what it wanted to play. I didn't know how to fix it since computers were relatively new to me. But I decided it would make a good email address.
