In 1979, WBR flipped to Disco. It did not last to long and by mid 1981, it had gone Urban.

Mac, I think you're correct on most of your dates, but I have a couple of notes/corrections...

1. Disco 93 began in January of 1979, not '78. Detroit Radio Flashbacks has an aircheck of the format change and one of the last songs they played as a regular Top 40 before flipping to Disco was Billy Joel's "My Life," which was current in January '79.

2. April 25, 1972, was when WKNR-AM/FM flipped to WNIC and Beautiful Music. Stereo Island, which was a beautiful music/soft rock hybrid, began sometime in 1971, though I'm not sure of the date.. from the airchecks and sales demo it would seem to me to be in the spring or summer of '71, judging from some of the songs they were playing such as "Help Me Make It Through The Night". I'm not aware of the name "Stereo Island" ever having been used when the station was WNIC, but Stereo Island did begin while it was still WKNR-FM and the AM was still Keener 13.

3. WCHD had changed its calls to WJZZ by 1975, though again, I'm not sure of the date. The last mention of 105.9 as WCHD in the Broadcasting Yearbooks on David Eduardo's site is in the 1974 yearbook, which leads me to believe the change happened in '74 or possibly very late '73 - I have seen an Art Vuolo Radio Guide from '74 which lists the station as WJZZ.

Hey Guys:

I see that WLDM changed to WCZY around April or May of 1978. That is where it was sold to Combined Communications (4-20-78)

Just thought I would share that info I found.

yep...for you old radio buffs, Combined Communications was owned by John Bayliss...(Best owner I ever worked for....back in the days when a company was limited to only 7-AM's &-FM's and 7-TV stations....with only one of each in any single market. and in the case of Combined, one of each in the top 7 US markets) who has sinced passed, and is the man today's Bayliss Radio Scholorship program was named after.

Re: Format Changes History dates. Please Help :) WLBS NEW WAVE DATE.

Hey Guys:

It seems I have rounded down the date of which WLBS went New Wave. Sometime between March and Sept of 1983.

It was still Urban in March of 1983 and by Sept of 1983 was doing New Wave thanks to info given to me by John Bailey.

I am guessing the change came in the Summer maybe July of 1983? Any Opinions?
