format changes

austin radio is in a flux of radio format changes i dont think austin can stomach another fm talker.

105.9 hip pop oldies, classic rock
92.5 now sports simulcast of 104.9 and 1530
93.3 comming friday
98.9 talk
104.9 now sports along with 92.5 and 1530

i wonder about 102.3 and 1490

any quesses?

I agree, I don't think all of these talk formats will last here. Unfortunatly it will be about a year before we see any of them flip so in the mean time we will have to deal with them. Somebody needs to bring some sort of new music format to the market. I would like to hear Dance on FM again in Austin but of course that is unlikely to happen any time soon. I thought one of the stations was going to go Oldies. Wouldn't mind having a good oldies format in Austin.

Or maybe an eclectic oldies format. That would be something. Play the best music from the 30's 40's 50's 60's and 70's. Can you imagine a segue from Bennie Goodman into the Allmon Brothers, followed by a mini-concert of Bob Wills favorites, leading into some tasty Jeff Beck jam? A Sousa march, some Buddy Holly, a little Brubeck and then some early album track by Elton John?

You could call the station Grandpa Jack! Liners would consist of little kids saying winsome things like "Why do you have so many records, Grandpa?" "What's that thing that sits on top of the record while it's turning round and round?" "Why are the holes in your records so much smaller than the holes in mommy and daddy's CDs?" ;D

San Antonio/Austin/Re: format changes

according to radio insight.com 93.3 will be kgsr aaa and simulcast on 107.1 for ten days and then on nov 30, regional mexican will be on 107.1

Sadly most modern talk stations are about creating a comfort zone for the listener rather than educating them. It's pretty well been proven that listeners will stay tuned if they agree with what they're hearing and turn the dial if they're disagreeing. And stations want ratings not an educated populace.

105.9 should move to 102.3 and something new should debut on 105.9

What sense would that make? Both signals are C2 and are full-market, 102.3 is just 7 miles further south.

What would be gained from playing musical chairs?

105.9 was in the Trust to be sold; so if the format does well, Clear Channel may want to hold on to the format while still divesting 105.9. Someone had commented Liberman may have had an interest in 105.9. Would 98.9 also be an option for Liberman (if they want into the Austin market) if 105.9 is off the table?

98.9 is like the absolute losers of right wing talk radio.... Who is this Jason Lewis moron on at night? I can actually stomach Dave Ramsey, but good god this whole station is horrible.... it will not last, and I can't imagine anyone at the station thinking it will last either... there are obviously plans to reflip it. If there was a 24 hour Jeff Ward channel, I'd listen to it ;)

Interestingly they're using the same ''next generation of talk'' liner at Cox is using in San Antontio with its similarly formatted FM... and not making any ratings headway with it.

He's a right wing person out of Minneapolis who just this February launched into national syndication, at least, according to Wiki.

Here is my take on the recent format changes in this town.

92.5/104.9 Both signals are pretty pitiful in Austin, but I think there is an attempt to boost the 104.9 signal somewhat??? It seems like a real "local feel" sports talk format would be risky on the FM dial especially with a weak signal. However, I think time will tell. Smaller markets with no professional sports teams generally don't have a successful FM sports talk station.

93.3 The new home of KGSR. I summed up my thoughts on this in an earlier post. Basically KSGR risks some clarity issues with it's cental Austin core audience, and also blasts parts of centex that probably aren't interested in the format to begin with. Only time will tell on that one.

98.9 THe big talker. I'm guessing most likely a failure. Does anyone remember 104.3 the coyote? Granted this station has a slightly better austin signal, it will still fail if the format isn't done correctly. Although I haven't actually heard the station myself, from what others are saying, it doesn't seem promising.

102.3 Hard to say with this station. I think there are other formats that could bring in more advertising dollars than Christian Hit Music. (afterall, its no KLTY) This station since it's inception several years back has never brought in any great ratings. Wouldn't be surprised to see a format change next year.

105.9 Hip Hop?? I still don't believe this is the final format, but time will tell with this station as well. Considering this is the ONLY hip hop station Austin has had with a citygrade signal, the potential is there for success. The question is, will the effort be put in?

107.1 I think Emmis freeing up this signal is gonna work out better for a spanish station than KGSR.

I agree that 105.9 has a chance if that's the format, but it's not the only such station that has had similar coverage. In actuality, or maybe I should say in theory, 93.3 delivers a 70dBu ("city grade") signal over most of Austin (and Travis County as well). But as discussed here recently, it does have issues in some areas, places that 105.9 covers quite well.
