Format Flip Speculations...Could This Be The Year Of The Most Flips?

From its current New Jersey site, 94.7 may be worth less, but it's very far from worthless. It's still one of the highest population-count signals in the country, ahead of everything but the Manhattan FMs and possibly some of the big Chicago and LA signals.

I don't see any reason why ESPN wouldn't still be interested in the signal, and I doubt they'd be alone.

ESPN should still be interested in 94.7, but from its current NJ site it won't offer better coverage on Long Island than 1050 does right now. Not an expert on this, but I've heard WFME's plant and equipment is quite antiquated. Whomever acquires 94.7 has a huge job on their hands. :)

A new antenna, transmitter and audio chain is a significant undertaking, sure, but it's not really a "huge job" for any broadcaster with the resources to buy 94.7 in the first place. Keep in mind that Family has already started experimenting with moving the 94.7 antenna to the taller tower next to the existing WFME stick.

Do you know if this will improve reception in Queens and on Long Island? I've lived in both of those areas and 94.7 never came in clearly. :)

Except for the fact that KTU IS doing really well in the ratings, billing well and DubStep is a niche genre. KTU is now heritage as it's been a Rhythmic Station for many years. Pulse died . Let it go.

You violated one rule Radaio....I will NEVER let it go. So as long as there are dance music fans out there, I will NOT let this go. It "goes" when I do.

YES, 'KTU is doing well in the ratings. YES, 'KTU is heritage (and it's fair to say that THIS version as a "standalone", not counting 'KTU (1978 - 1985), is heritage by itself). YES, Pulse 87 "died" (terrestrially that is). But let's get this all straight.....

1). Dubstep? Is that what a lot of you think dance music is? Yes, dubstep is a part of it on an EDM standpoint, but even within our fan base there are those that really love it and those that really HATE it. For me, being 45, I just take it as "I'm not supposed to 'get it'" but then again it's not about people my age. College kids love it and if that works, then there you go. But a dubstep format? Nope. It will go out quicker than a "reggaeton" format.

Honestly I don't even think it should appear on a dance format, per se. The sound is more angst and alternative in nature. If 92.7 WLIR was still around, then dubstep would have been a perfect fit in there.

2). Like I had said, with the trends right now it's just really a matter of "when", not "if" the dance/rhythmic format returns on the air. Yes, you would have to play the commercial elements that's on CHR right now but it would also be about those that have deeper tastes that want to hear artists that only a "Pulse 87 style" station would have given the shot to.

3). Honestly, I wouldn't really WANT a station to sound like a Pulse 87 this time around. Things have certainly changed pretty quickly since 2009 in terms of dance music, for the better. I would want such a station to lean more current based on the trends happening. And in that sense, while classic freestyle may still be popular amongst the fans that have stayed core to the music from the 80's, there wouldn't be much room for it this time. And THAT'S where if such a station happened, 'KTU could go back to playing more of the classic freestyle since you do have those within those demos that still love it.

Unless CBS or the Steinbrenner family buys 94.7, sports is not going to cut it. The price will be too high for the pbp to snatch up by anybody else. ESPN is a straw dog on radio.

CBS couldn't buy it anyway. That was the deal they made with the FCC with their purchase of WLNY (TV-55).
