Format for 100.3 in August will be....?

E

Dear Mr. Pirkle,
We now know you intend to take back the 100.3 signal from Citadel. Please, please, please, please, please, PLEASE do NOT put country music of any shape, flavor or substance on this frequency. We are overrun with such in our area.

Thank you,
Coalition for East Tennesseans Who Don't Want Any More Country

I think the better question would be "Format for 98.7 in September will be....?"

I vote this the best post of the week!

At the Coalition, we have already begun work on the canvas and PVC signs that say "SHAME ON 100.3".

According to Channel 10, Ed Brantley is the new GM of 100.3 and will be an on-air personality.

Now what format do you think that would indicate?

Unbeknownst to most is the fact that Ed and Johnny are HUGE 'Weird Al' Yankovic fans. I foresee "Weird Al 100" in our future! You can bank on that.

How many direct competitors has WIVK had over the years? Have ANY of them been able to take substantial numbers and/or revenue away from 'The Frog Station?'

I'm not being sarcastic, I'm just asking the question. New to Knoxville and trying to catch up on the local radio scene.

Only one. WOKI - 100.3, the Hitkicker. That's the reason the station was LMA'ed to start with. WIVK couldn't take the revenue beating so they stepped up and put the money back in their pocket by putting some of it in Pirkle's pocket too.

Citadel wasn't the original one to LMA WOKI. Dick Broadcasting LMA'ed it when they owned WIVK. After they sold WIVK, WNOX and WSMJ to Citadel, Dick continued to operate WOKI until the summer of '03, when Citadel assumed the LMA. If I remember correctly, Dick still ran 100.3 The River from the same building on Kingston Pike where Citadel was operating WIVK, WNOX and WSMJ, which later became WYIL.

IF the Ed part of the rumor mill has legs, then sure Country make sense. But so does keeping it Talk. Why else is Citadel going to migrate their audiences to the new signal for three full weeks? There's plenty of (syn) conservative Talk talent not on WNOX. Ed's strength now is as a sales guy with tons of local relationships, the format doesn't matter. Talk also keeps the overhead LOW. The way JP likes to operate.

But, if 100.3 goes back to Country, then the real question is will Journal nut up, and get in on the action with JP. Q93 has made quite a dent in the WIVK numbers, but Journal's stick doesn't have the surrounding coverage to "git r done." Operationally, even for JP moving the Q-style format to the 100.3 Blowtorch would make much more sense, than going for the nostalgia of the Hitkicker moniker splitting the Country Pie further. But if Journal is too poor and passes, maybe Ed can hire Q's Paul and force Journal to change format.

I think it's funny nearly all of the reader comments on the WBIR page are not about losing the great WNOX signal, but about losing the OLDIES on 98.7! At this point, it's obviously a smart move to put country on 100.3, but once that happens hopefully Journal will be smart and take 93.1 to some kind of classic hits format. There is no way Q93 and its two share can compete with two full power country giants.

Pretty sure the young audience of Journal's FM's will make it easier for other stations to pick at the heart of WIVK's demo strength. You'd think everyone else in the market would leave the 18-34 demo to them. You'd also think that Journal knows what it has and wouldn't want to mess with it. Well, stranger things have happened. Especially today.

I sure hate the thought of losing the oldies station on 98.7. If someone else won't pick up the True Oldies Channel affiliation, maybe we could get a station with the classic hits format. WKQK 94.1 in Memphis is an EXCELLENT classic hits station - it's about all I listen to when I am there. It truly reminds me of listening to Boss radio (like 56 WHBQ) in the late 60's and early 70's, and they also play songs from the 80's. Their playlist is as good as any I've heard - true Top 40 format when Top 40 played rock, pop, and soul music. I would love to have that here. "KQK" keeps me off satellite radio when I'm over there.

I never thought I'd be saying this but satellite radio is becoming quite appealing to me...........

This is the same thought I had earlier today. Pirkle could decide to keep 100.3 in the news/talk format and go head to head with WNOX (98.7). Now that would be interesting. He, along with Ed, could court Hallerin and Phil and see if they would sit out a non-compete and come over in the future. Or how about putting someone like Walker Johnson on in mornings. He did mornings with Todd Etherige at WKVL 105.3/850 when they were doing talk and it was honestly the most entertaining morning show in Knoxville at the time. Also, as mentioned, there is plenty of syndicated talk to go around. Plus, it wouldn't be unheard of to think that 100.3 could steal away Rush from 98.7. Premier/Clear Channel has yanked Rush from stations in other markets to move him to bigger signals. They might do the same in Knoxville. Hannity and Levin would be harder to get since they are actually syndicated by Citadel (although WNOX tape delays the shows, and the opportunity to air live instead on 100.3 might tempt the higher powers at Citadel corporate; or at least force some changes to the schedule at 98.7). Anyway, could be interesting. I don't know if Pirkle would have the power to pull off a new talk outlet, but with Ed Brantley behind the helm, he might be able to to bring over some big names and advertisers away from Citadel.

Oh well, guess we'll just have to sit back and see what develops. I'd still love to see it return to CHR (but with Ed on board, that seems unlikely). But if Pirkle did consider CHR, he should bring back Roy Jaynes (aka "Brother John"/"Cadillac Jack") to the market. He recently got canned by Brewer Broadcasting in Chattanooga when they went talk and he still knows how to program one hell of a successful CHR type format, or maybe even a killer retro 80s/90s type format. (Anyway, just another name & idea to throw out there).

As far as the oldies/classic hits format goes. With 98.7 pulling some pretty decent numbers lately, I think someone else in the market will dive in after the change. If they go country on 100.3, I would look for 93.1 to go classic hits. If not them, than maybe South Central's 95.7/106.7 combo. Or one of the local owner/rimshot signals (96.7, 106.1, or 105.3). But the format has proven it has legs, so I think someone will grab it. Guess we'll have to wait and see if they do it on the cheap and simply pick up True Oldies Channel, or if they put a real, locally programmed classic hits station on the air. That would honestly be the best answer. Then, you could deal with the True Oldies channel's aging demos, by focusing more on just late 70s and 80s, like many classic hits stations are now doing. Should be an interesting rest of the year around the K Town dial though.

How long since the Hitkicker was last on the air? How long has Citadel been in the market. Who LMAed the AAA format?

The Hitkicker was last on the air in '99. Citadel has been in the market since 2004.

Citadel didn't "assume" the LMA. They had to sign a brand-spanking-new one.

I like the talk idea, but it will never happen. Pirkle still has the country catalog and has been seening buying more.

Oh, and if talk did happen it wouldn't include Walker. Talk about someone the market doesn't remember.

Citadel has no idea of the scope of the free publicity it gave Mr. Pirkle. And the nice head start it gave Mr. Brantley. It should wind up being many times more valuable than a severance tied to a non-compete. Anybody remember the boost WATE gave Margie and WBIR back in the 70's?

Now all we need is a "Johnny and Ed said it would" umbrella.

IIRC Hannity had in his old Disney/ABC deal that if ABC Radio was sold he could do another syndication deal. I think he went with CC.
