Format holes in LA

What format holes exist in LA? Although KSWD signed on with a AAA lean it now airs a Classic Hits format. AAA is a format hole. With Power 106's move in recent years to include some of the pop realm, it would seem that an Urban Contemporary such as Power 105/NYC or WGCI/Chicago would also be a format hole. LA also has no Active Rock station. For other formats, Real Alternative Rock and Dance CHR previously existed on 103.1. Any others?

Well the ones that are missing have been tried but all failed. Urban AC, Rhythmic AC, Dance all bit the dust

All Comedy Radio I think would do good here.
GenXradio I think it would be sucessful here in LA.
Classic Country never been tried in LA probally would flop.

Mainstream Urban is mainly the only thing in LA thats missing. KPWR plays the same music but its Rhythmic which is fine. Its just kinda werid being in the Top 2 market.

Full time...

Opera
Baroque
Symphonic
Light Classical

KUSC (and KMZT for as long as that lasts) have to carry the entire classical repetoire.

Power 106 is ok. KPWR has partially went back to Hip Hop & R&B. KJLH is on life support , Aundrae Russell doesn't know how to program the station right, KDAY is close to urban contemporary despite spinning old school hip hop.

I don't think there is a real Top 40 station in LA. Every station seems to be leaning R&B and Hip-Hop. If you listen to Hits 1 on Sirius, they throw in anything current pop, R&B, lite alternative from Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, Nelly to Shinedown, Muse, etc.. There are lots of songs I hear on satellite that I will never hear on KIIS, Amp, etc...

The top 25 songs make up over half the total weekly spins on KIIS.

The artists in the top 25 are:

Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez (twice) , Dr Dre, Jeremih, BEP, Niki Minaj (twice), Lupe Fiasco, Adele, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Pitbull, Britney Spears (twice), Selena Gomez, Beyonce, New Boyz, Ke$ha, Bruno Mars, Tinie Tempah, taylor Swift, Pink.

That's current American Top 40 music to me... a mix of styles of anything appealing to a current based pop music.

There is no such thing as a format hole. As others on here will tell you, the programming that exists on radio nationwide is what makes a buck for the station owners. And in various ways, that has been the case since 1920.

I actually actually think that SXM Hits 1 doesn't follow any type of chart and goes out to find their own hits. Top 20 on 20 seems a little more chart focused but there's a good chance it's programmed by the same person.

KIIS is more mainstream now more than ever. AMP is not the real Top 40 but most of the pop hits are Rhythmic Dance Hits. This is LA my friend not Omaha NE

BTW Power 106 is still mainstream urban but it's billed as Top 40/Rhythmic to attract latinos. I've moved away from radio in the recent weeks to focus on my personal life and my
friendship. Sorry to get off topic. Another thing Usher has been a staple at the hispanic teens since his 1998 hit Nice & Slow. Yeah that's right Power 106 played Usher's Nice & Slow right around the time they revamped their playlist. BTW I found out about Power 106 playing Usher's Nice & Slow via an February 14, 1998 billboard article.

Depends on the market. Her song Naturally was added to the Top 40 charts. Lots of Disney artist have been getting airplay on KIIS in recent years from Miley to The Jonas Bros. No surprise to me. KIIS is different from those 2 stations in Bay Area.

Exactly Raven-Symoné's Blackflip was getting spins on KIIS in 2004. I remember then playing The Jonas Brothers "When You Look Me In The Eyes" in 2008.

KIIS is definitely a mainstream CHR. Yes, they play more rhythmic hits, but look at the CHR chart and the majority of it is rhythmic hits by rhythmic artists. Rock just isn't in style at CHR right now.

KIIS seems focused, while Hits 1 on Sirius sounds like an unfocused train wreck. I love the CHR format but I never listen to Hits 1 because of their lack of consistency. It sounds sloppy. If anything, the complaint should be that Hits 1 isn't rhythmic enough. They didn't play Rihanna & Drake "What's My Name" ( a #1 hit on several charts) until well after it had peaked on the CHR charts and, even then, they cut the Drake part.

We are having a similar disagreement over on the CHR board. My take is that CHR stations should play the most popular songs in their market- and if this leans rhythmic, or alternative, or country pop (depending on demographics) then so be it. The CHR chart should reflect what songs are popular across the country, rather than stations in Omaha having to play what is popular in LA, just because its a chart topper.

Would probably not work, but a small AM classic country station in L.A. would be cool.

An Active Rock station would do REALLY well in the L.A. market, although it'd be a bit tough to sell (aside from the Budweisers and Chevy truck dealerships of the world).

Regarding Triple A, I think that KCSN (the Cal State Northridge station) is about to hire a PD and tighten things up, music-wise. While the signal isn't the best, I think if they're smart, they'll fill the void.

Active Rock in L.A.? Maybe. Mix in the usual suspects (Metallica, Alice In Chains, Disturbed, Tool, Godsmack, etc.) with some of the more hard-edged alternative titles, and it just might work.

The whole vibe in LA seems a bit too laid back for Angry Rock I mean Active Rock. Maybe that's why the current rock stations in town are content to play Dirty Heads and Sublime so much.
