Format Holes in Salt Lake City?

Wait, does SLC have a classic rock outlet? Not Classic hits! I think there is a format hole for that format. Is there any other format hole in the city with surplus of FM Signals?

I don't see a Classical station either. I see a ton of ac varieties and enough country to get me speakin with an accent, y'all. (i actually like country!)

I still am amazed that 1019 the end is marked as AAA.

As noted elsewhere, KBYU is classical for much of its broadcast day and has a killer signal. Other non-comms in the market also do some classical now and then.

99.5 used to be classic rock, so did "Z-93.3" at one time. The format has struggled from time to time. The 93.3 flip to country was something that I really didn't understand at the time and it was an unpopular move. Now, 10 years on, it looks like genius. Well, I suppose Arrow 103.5 is as about as close to a classic rocker as the market gets now - at least for classic rockers who prefer to play it safe. On the other hand, KBER probably satisfies the harder-edged classic rock fan.

But remember, Salt Lake is a demographically young market and - thanks to the culture - older demos seem to listen to FM-100 or Olides.

The format hole that I mentioned elsewhere is mainstream urban. It's so different from anything else (except maybe U92 - which is CHR/R) that it could pull some numbers, especially in the growing latino community and in the younger demos.

KBYU-FM had a 1.8 share in the Fall 05 ARB... with a cume of 82700... Non-coms are not reported in the Trends... and R&R doesn't report them in the Books. It's done high ones to mid twos for YEARS.

KURR 99.5 just had problems getting a big enough cume that would convert to a solid foundation. It really had a hard time keeping it over 80,000... I don't think it made it to 100K in the last four or five years of its existence. and often fell well below 80K.

The threshold magic number in SLC for consistency is around 120K. Some specialty types of formats like Classical and Smooth Jazz can get by with less because they are a big image sell and they get a halo effect going for them in the Diaries.
