Format predictions for 92.9

Given today's announcement of the departure of Michelle Engel, Dave FM appears to be dead. I suspect a new format will start in a next few weeks or so (week after next is the start of a new book, so changes in format logically should be made at this time).

I say this because there is a new corporate philopsophy at CBS Radio. The "whatever" ways that brought us Dave are gone. Their Free FMs are going away. I suspect the experiment of Dave is toast.

I am praying for 92.9 to go either AC or Hot AC (or 99.7, just give B98.5 some competition).

Dear God, make it stop.

How about "Hot, New Z-93"? It worked so well in 1987.

/sarcasm
//still weird thinking of Z-93 playing Sir Mix-a-Lot's "My Posse's on Broadway" in heavy rotation

I still believe that 92.9 could be a viable rock/AAA frequency. I have been to many SRO/Sold out shows (Graham Parker/Todd Rundgren, ps. Happy Birthday to Todd today!) at small venues (Variety/Roxy) that got no radio support. To me this means that the audience is there, it just needs to be mined a little more. If Wheeler doesn't contact me ([email protected]) I can't see him fixing the problems.

I don't know whether CBS wants to invest the time or money to do so. It's much easier to put up a non-stick wallpaper music station like Hot AC and live with a respectable 3 rating and top 10 in female 25-34 demos.

When I look at census numbers, I don't think 92.9 will stay AAA. The non-ethnic 25-34 population grew at 8% compared to 177% Asian and 391% Hispanic (http://www.metroatlantachamber.com/images/yrstudy.pdf). The 35-44 demo is shrinking (http://apps.atlantaga.gov/citydir/dpcd/cdp/section_1125195527968.html). The numbers reveal that a station aimed at white, 25-44 is fighting an uphill battle for overall numbers. AAA stations usually draw higher income individuals and that is attractive to advertisers. There is a reason that McDonald's advertises on Q100 and D. Geller on 92.9 (by the way, I heard an ad for the D. Geller Valentine's Day sale.)

I doubt there will be a major shift until the Dirty Birds are gone. If memory serves, the Falcons have 2007 & 2008 left on the contract. Judging by the off the field actions (Vick, Finneran, Brooking and a new coach) there won't be much winning or interest in that team. I don't think Falcons management would be happy if the station became Hot AC.

It may be hard for some to believe now but Z-93 was part of the first wave of "Crossover" stations. It evolved from a Rhythmic/Dance friendly CHR/Pop station to a Crossover station pretty much the same time as KMEL San Francisco and B-96 Chicago, and a couple of years after Hot 103 NYC and Power 106 L.A. were launched.
There really is no need though for Z-93 to reemerge with 95.5 The Beat in place. When you think about it, Atlanta has the same number of CHRs today as it did back in 88 - Star 94 leans adult CHR just as it did back then as 94Q, there's Q-100 as a full blown CHR/Pop station similar to the old Power 99, and 95.5 The Beat doesn't sound all that different from what Z-93 sounded like this week back in 88.
Interesting to note that Q-100 has now been doing CHR/Pop just as long Power 99 if not longer, and that 94.1 has been doing some form of CHR since the early 70s.
One thing's for sure - Atlanta's CHR landscape today is far better (for listeners) then it was 10 years ago when the only game in town was Star 94 doing an ultra-conservative type of Adult CHR (the kind you're more likely to find in Allentown rather then a major market).

For the love of god Atlanta has ENOUGH CHR / Hot AC / AC stations. If you're a fan of this format you have many choices so please, let us music fans enjoy at least one or two stations, will ya?

Mr. Wheeler: Bring O&A to Atlanta.

I love O&A...listen to them everyday but there is NO way they are taking a chance with them right now. A few cities have dropped them and execs are scared to add them. So I think they are out. And I'm not totally sold on "Local talent" but I think Wheeler will concentrate on hiring a local morning show, whatever the format. Mornings are WIDE open right now. Project doesn't have one, River has no personality, Star is losing half, 99x is still bad, why not take a chance to create the "next best thing" in morning drive?

I'm not convinced Wheeler is the answer but at least he's better than Engle!

CBS did format flips on two stations Friday. They also announced Dave's new PD. Why didn't they change Dave's format? Changing format is easier than hiring a PD, you can get "format-in-a-box" from a consultant.

I say no way on O&A. It is not like they have exactly caught fire since returning to free radio and with recent controversy why tempt it. I say the big question is which Cox station will they go after. The easiest route is a format tweak and potentially a return to Z93 and go after the River with the hopes of retaining most of their current core audience and attract new listeners. Also there is still some disgruntled 96Rock fans out their wandering aimlessly up and down the dial.

I don't see the Falcons as a major deterrent. If they want to move in a direction not suited to the Falcons they have the nice little option of moving them to the number one rated station in the market. If you have been to a falcons game lately their seems to be many V103 listeners following the team. Clear Channel did it with the Braves they can do it with the Falcons.

There's no Jack in Atlanta because the format doesn't work. After its initial boom, the format goes bust and is now middle-of-the-pack at best in virtually all markets. In some of em, it's a bottom-feeder.

CBS does have quite a few Jack stations. Why not Atlanta?

Because in 2005, no station not owned by Cox or CC was in flippable mode. Cox and CC won't buy the Jack rights.

I could work in Atlanta, given how the River works with little-to-no DJ interruptions. Given that the fad is past, I doubt it.

The rythmic AC "Movin'" format would work well here in Atlanta, with a big young and minority population. It is meant for DJ's/small playlists.

i'm sick of hearing O&A crap. they won't work here.

i lisened to dave a bit this weekend and i think the rotation has changed a bit. i heard some artists i hadn't heard in a while or before. definitly sounded better than previous weeks.

i can't wait to see what they do to improve.
