Format question

I have mentioned before that as a programming philosophy, playing a variety of hits is a good idea, whatever the format. A number of country music stations are using that approach. However, the format known as Jack is doomed to failure because it plays a variety of hits, but from too wide of a time span. Jack plays anything from the 1960s to today.

My question is: I notice that this board is called 80's/90's Variety Hits. That format can work. So then, is Jack an 80's/90's variety format or is it an all-over-the-road format?

Jack mostly targets women 35 to 50. That means music between 15 and 35 years ago: 1971 through 1991 seems to be a fair assessment of what (Indy) Jack plays MOST of. There are a few JACKed songs that definitely fall in the oldies category.

80's/90's (think: WENS) isn't exactly a format setting the world on fire. In fact, several of those stations have become Jacks.

sorry to disagree. but most JACK stations are centered at around a 38 yr old, slightly female lean

jack is also not a typical **ERA** station like u categorize oldies or classic rock or eighties- concept is entirely different in that they are responding to radio audience's cry out for radio that is not programmed in the typical manner. and the fact is many JACK-type stations (and their variations) are doing OK in the ratings and reallly OK in sales vs. their former formats (there R exceptions. most notably cbs-fm in ny).

and contrary to mr. gloom N' doom who started the post, IN HIS MIND Jack is doomed. keep in mind he got fired by a station who went jack and he had to go back to board-opping. bad perspective, bad radio person
