Format suggestion for KXXS

Now that KXBT is Oldies, KXXS should look into a Old School format simular to 94.5 in Dallas.
An Urban Oldies station to get some of the KAZI listeners. This would make since due to the lower frequency it is on, and KFMK Jammin 105.9's demise. It is a void in Austin. Where you can't pick up KXXS, you can pick up KAZI which can be heard around the Central Austin area.

KXXS tower is located in Elgin which covers Northeast and East Austin which has a sizeable African-American demographic. BMP needs to really look into this. Urban Oldies on 92.5 and Oldies on 98.9 what a good mix. Talk flanked for them, Sports well much covered on their 104.9 signal. Spanish language format well that would work better for them if it were just on 104.9 to go after Que Buena but they tried that. A Urban Oldies station has not been tried, however a Rhythmic Oldies has.

BMP would have the first Urban Oldies station EVER in Austin, Texas. Food for thought.

Sports well covered on 104.9? You have GOT to be kidding! ;D

With the LEAST big of tropo (which happens all too frequently) "The Horn" can't be heard north of Northland Drive in central Austin. Even on a good day, here at my house near Steck and MoPac, the signal is spotty. If anything, "The Horn" needs to go to 98.9 and put the oldies on the other two frequencies.

KXXS wants to move to the Western Hills antenna farm, which would be a game changer. The current Elgin location is irrelevant in the long term.

You're working off old info, wilddav713. According to an analysis of recent census numbers by the Austin American Statesman, "The number of African Americans residing in Central East Austin - once considered the epicenter of black and brown life in Central Texas - shrank by 27 percent during the past decade, while the number of whites living there increased by 40 percent..."

Totally agree. The local BMP GM, Bob Proud, even said a while back in The Statesman that The Horn was their biggest money-maker. It's also their most promising format. Why not put it on your best signal? If 92.5's move to West Lake is ever approved, The Horn will then be on BMP worst FM signal in Austin.

I suspect the theory is that The Horn is working on BMP's worst frequency, and not much you could put there would work. So, put something that doesn't stand a chance on that weaker frequency on your best stick.

Is that a good decision with good logic? Well, time will tell. If no one launches a competing sports/talk station that beats 104.9, it obviously was. However, if Clear Channel's translator at 103.1 steals its thunder, it wasn't.

From a purely competitive standpoint, BMP is making the safe decision. Clear's hands are tied with their four FMs all doing pretty well. A translator is about the best The Zone can do for now.

On paper, 103.1 should be pretty competitive in most of the heavily-populated areas of Travis county and even better than 104.9 up near Pflugerville. But in practice, it seems pretty inferior on all of my random listens. (If someone finds 103.1 better, I'd love to hear where you are listening from.) It's also worth pointing out that besides the top of the hour ID, Clear Channel isn't really promoting 103.1 at all.

I am a big believer in doubling down on your core and the assets that have the most potential. The Horn is definitely the core to BMP's Austin cluster. It's actually a pretty good product and I think there is an awful lot of upside if it was on the much better 98.9 signal.

True Oldies on 98.9 will probably do okay ratings wise in the short run, but I am skeptical if this will be a great long-term franchise that consistently produces large cash flows. Time will tell.

103.1 is absolutely better along MoPac from 2222 to at least the beginning of the toll road. 104.9 has serious problems in Northwest Hills (no listeners there, eh? ;)) beginning at Northland Drive.

Well, this certainly took long enough: the FCC recently approved the switch of KBEY Burnet from 92.5 to 103.9, which clears the way for KXXS to move from Elgin to Sunset Valley. Although it hasn't been posted yet, it's likely that the KXXS application has also been approved or will be shortly.

Here's the proposed service contour (60dBu) for the upgraded KXXS: http://maps.google.com/?q=http://tr...q=92.5&contour=60&city=SUNSET_VALLEY&state=TX
