Formats Missing in Cambria/ SLO

Are there any formats missing in the Cambria/SLO area? Off-hand I really don't see any type of Jazz station, unless public radio does it. perhaps a classic hits?

There are 2 different answer for each of those cities. SLO along with the 5 cities on the coast, in land cities Atscadero, Templeton can receive stations from Santa Maria and Santa Barbara.
Cambria is isolated and because of the mountains east and south of them can only receive and handful of stations, those on the mountain tops, KZOZ for example, but they do have their own Album station KPYG 94.9 (AAA) that plays a wide range of music to make up for any format losses.

wow. Ya I tend to forget about the signal loss from the mountains. Looking on RL it doesn't seem like there are many stations throughout that area, but the maps aren't so accurate when it comes to the mtns.

in SLO... there's a TON of Classic Hits formats... WAY too many if you ask me:

93.3 KZOZ is Classic Rock
95.3 The Beach is Classic Hits (with an 80's lean)
99.1 The Fox is Classic Rock
104.1 Pirate Radio is an Adult Hits (similar to a Jack-FM)
Q 104.5 is a traditional Classic Hits station

No shortage of Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles and Phil Collins there.

ya that was the impression I got from looking online. I'm looking to move to the area and was wondering whats around. I'm pretty big into Jazz and smooth jazz, but I'm guessing there's not really a market there for it. I do like classic hits--but that seems like alot.

The other thing people keep telling me is Cali is super expensive. :(

Cambria needs a few more stations - that can go broke fast. LOL The new 106.7 CP is a lost cause. No site. Just a fake site -- on paper. And the County will never allow any new site or tower. In fact -- the old KOTR tower is the ONLY site and the 106.7 is to short spaced to use that site. Bet you can buy that CP for less than 25 K.

KTEA is up for sale if anyone has a spare 300K lying around in a low/no interest savings account. I'm thinking the station currently bills about 50K a year. Part of the problem with KTEA is its sleepy format of standards and old radio shows which the owner insists on keeping (I don't think it has ever changed formats). But with the right format and promotion, the station could do well.

Another problem CP is KCJZ 105.3 which is also for Cambria. The owner has about a year left and there has been talk of building the stationat the KTEA site and getting it licensed before the CP runs out. Looking at the contour map it seems that much of KCJZ's signal goes out into the ocean. So they're basically going to be broadcasting to the seals and otters.

If I had that CP I would try to move it to San Miguel which would provide a first service to that town. From there I'd send the signal down through the valley into Paso Robles, Templeton and Atascadero. Eventually try to get a booster (or translator) and put the signal into Cayucos and Morro Bay. Could be a very nice little station for the Central Coast.

Anyway, it's fun to dream.

Hate to crush your dreams -- but none of the Cambia stations can be moved from the old KOTR tower - south of town. The Cambria-Cayucos area is stuck with all four signals -- forever. 94.9 B1 - Cayucos, 103.5 A KTEA, 105.3 A KCJZ and the new 106.5 A which has no real site and may never be built. Not one of the freaks -- has any room to re-locate. you are correct about the KOTR site however. Most of the signal -- serves fish, seals or otters out in the ocean. To bad - the Cambria area is not growing faster.

KPYG 94.9 does cover well with there 25K from Cambria to SLO west of the mountain range and has a repeater on the same frequency in SLO, but not good for in-land cities Paso Robles, Templeton, and Atascadero and is partially blocked to the 5 cities (Shell Beach, Pismo Beach, Grover Beach, Oceano, and Arroyo Grande), and has no signal in Santa Maria County.
