Formats Needed (and Not Needed) in Cleveland Radio

What are some formats that Cleveland needs to change up the scene, and some that need to fall by the wayside:

I can't think of any that should fall, though I think Cleveland could benefit with a Rhythmic AC and/or CHR and News/Talk on FM that is not sports or shock.

Bring back the AOR format with a wide open door format. Blues to Folk..Classic Deep Tracks...We can lose the all sports talk format. Bring back the 50's,60s and 70s. Drop the Lake format. They never play anything.

It seems like we have too much sports talk.

An oldies station that plays 50s/60s/early 70s would be nice. Similar to what WMJI was a while back, but with more variety, not the same 300 songs over and over.

Majic's HD2 channel plays more that timeframe, leaning more towards the pre-Beatles era. If you can pick up WJCU 88.7, Retro Radio is on every Saturday afternoon from 3:00pm till 5:30pm ET, or listen online at wjcu.org - Jumpin' Joe generally plays tunes from a particular survey such as WIXY, WHK, KYW/WKYC. or even CKLW for the current calendar month and day but going back to the year of the survey, generally 1964-1971, he takes requests, and plays a lot of stuff that was pretty much forgotten about over the years. Today he's doing a special B sides show, so a break from his regular routine. You can listen to some of his past shows here, as I archive them:

Just one all news station would be nice in a market this size.

I would like to see this too. I know many other cities have this (or had it), just news, no Rush, no Beck, just local and some national news 24/7, with weather and traffic on the 10's. I know LA has/had KNX, Seattle was KIRO and maybe KOMO too - I'm going back some years on this. Isn't KYW in Philly doing this too? NE Ohio has a sizable metropolitan area of maybe 2M+ with Akron and Canton? WTAM is the only 50K watt AM station that will penetrate the whole of NE Ohio day and night.

We need a true 24 hour local news presence. Akron has that more or less with WNIR, at least it's mainly LOCAL talk there, if something happens there, you bet it will be on that station instantly. WTAM is so dog gone inconstant, sometimes you just want the traffic and weather on the top of the hour, often you have to wait for Triv to stop jacking his jaws for the news to start, or they start the pre-game show 3 hours ahead of the game. You want the 5 minute news, traffic and weather, that's all you're asking for at the top of the hour, and they won't even do that. I'm not saying during the game, but the pre-game blabber, they can keep us informed for 5 minutes an hour!

Danny, I listen to Jumpin' Joe every Saturday. He's the grooviest guy in the world. It's too bad he's only on for 2 1/2 hours. I also listen Commander Greg's Golden Age of Rock & Roll on WBWC 88.3 on Sunday evenings. His show is OK, but it seems to be to a lot of the same stuff over and over. Also, his constant rhyming chat gets a little annoying. Tom Lamoureux's Sunday Night at the Oldies show also on 88.3 is all over the map - 60s/70s/80s. Sometimes it is OK.

I don't have HD radio yet. I'll have to get one soon.

An all news format only lasted 3 months here in Columbus.
Did 103.9 even have local news? Every time I listened, they either had syndicated ABC News content or political talk. It sounded nothing like what an All Newser should sound like, but maybe I listened at the wrong time.

I was thinking not only of the KYW/WINS/WCBS big city operations, but of a station like KQV in Pittsburgh, which has been all news for almost 40 years. Not a big player in the market by any means, but they fill a niche.

Monday thru Friday 103.9 had local news at the top and bottom of the hour during the day. During the rest of the time it was America's Radio News. It was the original home for jazz until 1992 when they lost their license and had to go dark. In 1998 when it returned on the air the signal has had currently 7 different formats. This is the second time as a variety hits format. They had a 3 year stint with it as Ted from 2004- 2007.

I definitely think at least by 2015, when 87.7 will be forced off the air, that locally focused alternative format should be placed on either 106.5 or 107.3. Being the home of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, I think we need this. 106.5 the Lake is sounding too much like the old Mix 106.5. Also, since WDOK is much hotter sounding now than they were 2 years ago, 107.3 could flip to a soft-AC perhaps mixed with adult standards format to pick up the audience WDOK left behind when they went hotter and more up-tempo. They could always do what WRVF 101.5 the River does in Toledo...run a smooth jazz program on Sunday mornings. WRVF has a program called 'Sunday Brunch' hosted by Suzanne Carroll Sundays from 8am to Noon where they play smooth jazz. According to her website, she is hoping to pick up other markets to syndicate it. Maybe Cleveland can be the first:

Any style of music played backwards at double speed.

Ahem....that's what streaming "radio" stations, Pandora-type sites, music on your smart phone, and MP3's are for....extreme niches that would never get a large enough audience to attract advertisers on a terrestrial radio station. As we've said for what seems like a million times on this forum...somebody's gotta pay the bills.

That's true. It does however feel like a lot of needs are not being filled in the Cleveland market. Internet radio will change how music is played and listened to, but there are still those out there who turn to terrestrial radio for music and talk.

I wouldn't be surprised if there would be a shift to news and/or talk on the FM. The area could support it if done right.
