What a shock that Kovas canned these stations to help 1590--NOT!

You've got that right, radioman148, I don't think they ever had any intention on building any of the new stations.
Their goal was to get three local stations knocked off the air, so they could boost 1590's power. This really speaks volumes about
the FCC. This one really bothered me because I liked WCGO 1600AM in Chicago Heights. I also have some fond memories of
WKKD/WFVR in Aurora. I listened to them quite often when they were playing oldies, as well as doing local news and playing local
sports game. WKKD AM and FM were great stations when Mr. Salter was running the show. Tom Skilling actually got his start
at WKKD radio when he was 14 years old. I know times change, yet I hate to see these little neighborhood stations disappear.
I know it happens a lot these day's. The way this went down was just wrong. The area that the station served has experienced
tremendous population growth. WKKD AM would have made an excellent neighborhood station, but Kovas didn't want it that way.

>>The way this went down was just wrong>>

Agreed. They just followed the process to get what they wanted which was a bigger signal for 1590. Nothing more.

Can you say greed? Kovas originally wanted to get 20kW-D/5kW-N on 1590 in Glendale Heights...their rimshotters weren't making money for them anyway, so let go of the people, sell the equipment. At least the brokered stations make alright money and they seem to pay the bills, and what they're doing does fulfill a need in the market. And they couldn't care less about ratings. Or local radio in the outlying communities...

Gentlemen, I respectfully disagree. NO not greed. Progress.

Kovas followed the rules and got a good attorney. The fcc is quite different NOW than it was a few years ago. Kovas knows how to work the system. Now they have a more powerful station and great resale value, due to having a signal over Chicago. They PAID to get those other signals. Even if WCGO will be brokered, it will be a success.

NO brokered station "cares about ratings." That's the nature odf the business. Ed Jacker owned half of WCRW, that was "shared time" and only ran 5 hours daily. HE drove a Cadillac, and paid me very well for 6 years. He made a ton. So did WOPA, WEDC, WSBC, WTAQ and others. So will Kovas.

(no pun intended) MORE power to them.

Money is the name of the game and they played the game well whether the listening audience likes it or not.

Kovas only cares that a PORTION of the population likes it. So does WGN. Money runs everything. This is news?

I've been wrong before like thinking WRTO would not be built.

But I believe if Kovas had sold Wonx at the time he bought the first station to shut down he would end up making more money than what he will when they finally sell 1590. There are too many brokers in chicago radio. 1590 is a great facility but air time pricing will drop if it hasn't already.

Link Said; (1)There are too many brokers in chicago radio. (2) 1590 is a great facility but air time pricing will drop if it hasn't already.

(1.) Mr. Link, HOW can there be "too many brokers?" This is Chicago. Truth is there are certainly "too many formats that don't cater to people over 50.

Actually, There are NOT ENOUGH brokers. In Chicago there are MANY unserved ethnic groups. In the population there are LOTS of people for whom (their native language) comes easier than English.

The question a clever operator, (like Kovas) asks is....Why shouldn't THESE people be served with news and community information as much as you and I?

These listeners listen to be "Americanized." It works. The loyalty of foreign language broadcast listeners is unparalled. It has worked since the 1920's when radio began. I'm sure, as I have been associated in various ways with a number of foreign language (and English language) broadcasters since the mid-1960's.

(2.) Note that pricing for brokered time in Chicago is mostly done by "auction." The intererested parties gather at a specific time/place and the station OWNER hears bids to get the HIGHEST price possible. In Chicago, this has been a "tradition" for over 20 years. WOPA and WCEV work that way, as did WTAQ, WEDC and WCRW. It works very well.
