Former 93BLX morning man passes

Just getting word that Ray Russell aka Ray Ray passed away this morning. He had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure a few years ago. A big guy who brought big laughs to the community. Having known Ray, I'll appreciate the memories.

It's really sad, I think it was Russell's declining health that was the biggest reason for him giving up his morning show, which did great in the ratings AFAIK. Let's not forget that he was a comedian too who had some success being featured on BET, with an appearance on Comic View and a short-lived sketch comedy show with Rickey Smiley called The Way We Do It. And as most folks know, he was the proud uncle of Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell.

He needed that heart transplant and just couldn't hold out. Ray Ray, you will most definitely be missed. :(

his departure from wblx had nothing to do with his health, the reason for his resignation was to manage his nephew's nfl career. ray was one of the "good guy's" proof that only the good die young. rip ray

I wasn't sure enough of either situation being the ultimate reason, I just remember that he had several absences from his show before his need for a heart transplant was made public. But you're right, Ray had done a lot in his short 42 years and probably would have found other ways to leave folks smiling.

According to a Facebook friend, Rickey Smiley got emotional while mentioning Ray-Ray's passing on his syndicated morning show on Friday morning. I either didn't know or had stupidly forgotten that both he and Ray went to Alabama State together and had been longtime friends instead of just comics crossing paths.
