Former Ch 10 Anchor Sighting

Remember Deborah Pyburn from KTSP? She's back on local TV, but this time as Deborah Brewster endorsing Jon Kyl for Senator. She's held up pretty well, given the years. But Nurse Jeff thinks they should have used the Diane Sawyer lens. We wonder what former anchor Jim Pederson will use? Liz Habib? Kris Long? Connie Colla? Bill Close? or... ;D

I thought that she was trying to be an Ann Coulter look-a-like (being newer to the area, I had no idea who she was).

I'm still trying to figure out how being stalked has much to do with abortion. ???

I haven't seen the ad with her, but she was stalked pretty intensively by some creep back in the day. Kyl sponsored a victims rights law and that's probably part of her reasoning for endorsing him.

For those newer to Phoenix, Deborah Pyburn-Brewer was an anchor on then-CBS affiliate Channel 10 for a good chunk of the 1980s (and maybe part of the 90s, too - can't recall).

In terms of local celebrity, she was on a par with current anchors like Lin Sue Cooney or Kari Lake.

I agree with you Formeraa; When I see the ad I am trying to figure out how stalking is tied into abortion.

With the mass influx of people here in the Valley, including me & Former, I wonder how many viewers recognize her? She probably has huge name recognition in Sun City!

Thanks for the clarification. I spent a year in Phoenix in the 80's when I was young. I thought that Linda Alvarez was the main anchor at Channel 10 in the mid-80's. All I remember is Newswatch 10PM (catchy name) with Bill Close and Linda Alvarez. Is my memory any good??

I also remember Channel 12 with Dewey Hopper's weather forecast and the "Hello Phoenix" theme.

Ray Nichols will storm out of his grave to give us all a Nichols worth of news.

But, I really want to see Stu Tracy and his human sized toothbrush, its so big, its just wacky!

Linda Alvarez anchored at KPNX with Bob Hughes under their "Action News" brand.
She's now with KCBS/KCAL Los Angeles and looks great!

You might be thinking of Mary Jo West being teamed with Bill Close at then KTSP (now KSAZ).

Thanks for clearing up my foggy memory! :D

I seem to remember Bill Close's close at the end of the newscast was something like "And that brings you up to date, I'm Bill Close. Goodnight!"

Yes, I knew Linda was now at KCBS. She does still look great!

Bill: And that brings us right up to date on the news, so for the KOOL News Team...
Mary Jo: Good night.
Bill: Good night.

Close never said his own name on air. If he was subbing for another anchor, it was
"we're sitting in for..." The royal "we."

IIRC, it was Dave Nichols, not Ray.

Are you absolutely sure about that? I spent most of 1983 in Phoenix. I believe that the newscast was titled "NewsCenter 10PM". I remember thinking that the title was quite clever! If Bill NEVER said his name on-air, I would definitely not have remembered it. I remember what people say, not what I read on the screen. Did he say it at the beginning of the newscast, then? I would swear that, in 1983, he said his name at the end of the newscast.

As for Linda Alvarez, the reason I remember her is because she said her name with a Spanish Language pronunciation. That is, I'm "Leeenda AAlvarrez".

Dave Nichols! Thanks, I got mixed up with Ray Thompson and his killer bola tie collection. ;D

I know Bill Close was famous for his bola ties but I don't remember Thompson wearing them as well.

Didn't Ray Thompson always wear a red tie?

Not to be confused with Kent Dana's red suit at Christmas.

OK, I'm having confusing flashbacks.

Ray Thompson did have the red tie and the Slim Whitman mustache.

Bill Close had the Bola Ties

Dave Nichols had the Nichols worth of news (and he looked a lot like Kent Brockman)

I think I spent too much time in the Lost Dutchman gold mine at the park. ;D
