Former Fox Meteorologist Robert Smith Dies at 59

Robert was a great TV success story. When I was at KTRE in Lufkin, Robert was our janitor.

Someone realized he had a great voice and a great look and tapped him for a commercial.

He started working his way up and eventually did the weather.

I also worked at KTRE for a time a few years before Robert got there, but my wife and I were living in Lufkin when he got the TV weather job.

I'll never forget the first time he did the weather on the 6pm news. He was so nervous I thought he was going to have a stroke.

As days went by though, you could see him relaxing and getting better and better, and inside of two or three months, he looked and sounded like he'd been doing it all his life.

Robert Smith was one of those rare people who never had an unkind thing to say about people, and people never said anything but nice things about him.

Does anybody know the story of why he was pushed out at Fox 26? I don't, and I wish someone would tell me.

When D'Art Bebel took over as GM of KRIV, he for some reason he did not like Robert. I heard he thought Robert was dry and boring and the two clashed. He wanted to promote Cecilia Sinclair to Chief and demote Robert. Robert was not going to do that and he decided to move on. Then, D'Art ended up running CeCe and Matt off, as well.

Robert was indeed, a good fellow. I remember he was in terrific shape. Each night, he would walk around the entire building and parking lot of the TV station for some exercise. He was relatively quiet, but he'd always have a kind word when he saw you. He has been missed at Fox 26 and now he'll be missed by everyone. RIP.
