Former host on WSB missing, under investigation

He’s now been charged by the FBI.

"He rented the time and wasn’t an actual [WSB] employee."

Would boilerplate disclaimers shield WSB in any legal action?

"Cox Media Group is not responsible for the claims and representations made by the sponsor" may not cover all the bases.

There is a lot of legal precedent that an ad medium can not be responsible for ad claims. Otherwise, every station, website and newspaper would have to test every product, verify every claim and satisfy every objection.

The media depends on the government to regulate and enforce; a misbehaving business will be sanctioned or closed by those authorities.

Think how many lawsuits media would get if we refused "the best tasting beer" or the "yummiest hamburger" because there was no proof to those statements.

The case that's always puzzled me was when WOOK-AM in Washington, DC, which targeted a black audience, lost its license in the mid-70's. I did a term paper on it in my senior year at the U. of MD, making multiple trips to the FCC to read the files.

WOOK sold a half-hour of brokered time on Sundays to a preacher. The preacher referred to what appeared to be Bible verses; for example, he'd say something like "chapter 7, verse 24." It turns out the numbers were actually bookie numbers for gambling purposes.

What I've never understood is why WOOK was deemed responsible for this. Even if they reviewed each broadcast, should they have figured out what was going on? I realize this is not a case of brokered time making claims about a product, but it's still content that was purchased by someone outside the station.

Thanks I had always heard rumors that a preacher on WAOK was doing it in the late 1960's or early 1970's. I never heard of any license revocation so I assume didn't happen here. One more myth of GA Broadcasting debunked.

Update a court order has been issued to freeze Chris Burns Assets.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Federal investigators have now frozen all the assets of a missing financial planner.

Securities and Exchange Commission investigators said in a new federal lawsuit that well-known metro financial planner Chris Burns raised $10 million in a Ponzi scheme after the SEC found there were no investments, just lies and money transfers.

At least 70 investors over three years were promised monthly checks with anywhere from 5% to 20% interest.

An investigator wrote that burns used the note proceeds to fund his lifestyle, pay business expenses and rent time for his weekly radio show on WSB Radio, of which he was not an employee.

Investigators also named Burns’ wife as a relief defendant trying to cut off any proceeds she might have from what authorities call a scam.

Erik Erickson's 3-minute video testimonial for Chris Burns still runs on Dynamic Money's site.

Their phone has been disconnected.
