Former KAKC/KBEZ GM Wes Stegeman passes away

Wesley Eugene Stegeman, 87, passed away Thursday, March 4, 2010, in Tulsa, OK. He was General Manager of radio stations KAKC and KBEZ; and from 1980 until present, he was owner and manager of Tupper Advertising.

Wes was one of the first people I met when I started at KAKC in September 1959. Although he was a lot older than the rest of us ("go-lee ... he must have been close to FORTY!") he was as hip as any jock on the staff. And when I worked with him again many years later, he still had that edge.

RIP, Wes -- you were one of the good 'uns ... no, make that, one of the BEST 'uns.
 
Wes was cool. He always called me "young man." He never went nuts when something I said on the air caused him to lose a client (can you IMAGINE that happening today?) The Rockin' 97 is legendary for a number of reasons, Wes was an intregral part of that legend...and will be missed.

Wes was a great guy. In news, I was constantly on his client's toes. If fact, (Mike, you may remember this) I even hurled on a client's shoes in the Skywatch traffic plane. Wes didn't yelled... he just bought me some Dramamine and sent me back up.

I missed the obit in the paper. Thanks for sharing Scooter.
 
I always thought of Wes as a cool older guy, too. When I worked for him in the late 70s, though, he was younger than I am now. Remember when we had a big snowstorm, John, and Wes was kind enough to put up a few of us at the lavish Trade Winds West? I wonder if a GM like Wes even exists today.
 
Why yes Mark, I do! It was very much appreciated. I lived about 30-miles away and as I recall, you were living in Pryor.

I must, however, question your use of the word “lavish”. The Trade Winds-West was pretty seedy by the late 70s. I remember one morning when the police would not let us into the station because of a man had taken a hooker hostage. We had to wait for the Special Operation Team to clear the scene before we could go to work.

I think calling the Tradewinds West "seedy" is being EXTREMELY generous. "Dump" would be an upgrade. It's amazing we were actually able to provide a decent radio product given the "accommodations." Yes, I do remember the Durkee hurl job. Ah, memories.
