Former KCRA Personality Harry Martin Passes Away

Found out that Harry Martin passed away yesterday at the age of 81. He worked at KCRA Channel 3 from 1957-88. He was best known as Kiddie Host, Captain Sacto as well as the host of WEEKNIGHT, an evening entertainment based talk show. Check out his obit at http://www.sacbee.com/101/story/719926.html

KCRA always has had a feud with KPIX (Sn Francisco) concerning the original local magazine show. WEEKNIGHT on KCRA started out as being called '7:30'. A half hour locally produced magazine show. Way before syndication.

KPIX started a little show called 'EVENING MAGAZINE'.

KPIX claims to be the first locally produced magazine show.

KCRA contends that Producers from KPIX visited KCRA and got their idea for their own version of '7:30'. After EVENING came out, 7:30 transitioned to WEEKNIGHT.

My understanding was that KPIX admitted taking the idea for "Evening: The MTWTF Show" (original title)
from 7:30. Of course, cbs5.com doesn't state that in their history section, but that's no surprise. But 7:30 was definitely first. To make matters worse, in the end Weeknight morphed into the local Sacramento edition
of Evening.

That's too bad...and strange that they would do that. Harry Martin was a Channel 3 institution. I would've loved to have seen it.

Once Westinghouse got "Evening" magazine running, it spread the show to its O&O stations, and then developed the syndicated version, "PM Magazine" which KXTV, 10 (then CBS) carried in the late 1970's. The show featured locally produced wraps introing syndicated segments and locally produced reports.

Ross DuClair was the principal videographer. He's a former CE for KFBK/CC, now at EMF, Rocklin... which, incidentally has openings for several engineering positions there, a field engineer in the Northwest, and a night personality for the Air One network.

Ted.
