Former KIQQ PD Lee Bayley Has Died

LARadioRewind said:
Lee Bayley died on February 17. In the 1960s he was morning DJ at KAKC-Tulsa and host of KOTV's Dance Party. In the '70s he was vice president of programming for Drake/Chenault. In 1978-80 he was program director of K-100, KIQQ. In the '80s and '90s he was a consultant.

There is a very short story and two photos on the KOTV website: http://www.newson6.com/story/21236976/member-of-kotv-family-lee-bayley-dies

Very sorry to hear this. Lee was a great programmer...Drake could have taken him from KAKC to KHJ and not worried.

Lee hired me to run the Snake in Canoga Park for Drake Chenault the month Elvis died. While I only lasted two months, I got to meet the great Bill Drake, Jim Carson who did KYNO FM voice tracks along with other Drake stuff, Mark Ford, Hank the dwarf Engineer, and Billy Moore, perhaps the best voice Drake Chenault ever used?

“He was a small-town kid raised in Sam Walton's backyard,” wrote Bob Shannon in R&R. “Lee met his only wife in second grade and never lost her. In his 40 years in our business he's had only seven jobs, has never been fired and, in the last 18-years of his career, has quietly consulted. He was a morning man with a 60 share, one of the guiding forces of 24-hour syndicated programming, and someone who worked so closely with Bill Drake that when they parted company, Drake was brought to tears.”

You and I must be in the D-C "Two Months" club! OK, it was a little longer than that, but Lee was my boss at the time. He was a most astute programmer and a pretty fun guy.

Did you know Bobbie Datz, the office manager? Another fun one there...

I will say Drake gave me the warmest handshake. No I don't think I knew Bobbie although that was so long ago! I took over soon after Sony Superscope stopped doing the duplication, and I was doing great until Elvis died. They sent me home to get some sleep, and called me two hours later to come back. I said no, soon after I didn't work there anymore? $500 a month Bob which was even bad back then!

I don't feel so bad about not having worked for Drake-Chenault in L.A. now. I was getting $650 in Ukiah (population 10,000) then.
