It saddens me to report that one of the unsung heroes of R&B/Soul Radio Broadcasting in Northeast Texas, Hercules Wells, has passed away from a lengthy illness. He was 61 years old. Wells worked at several stations in the Ark-La-Tex area, including KEES, KFRO, KZEY, KROZ-FM, KLGV, KCUL, and KMHT-FM in the Tyler-Longview-Marshall area, as well as KOKA and KMJJ-FM in Shreveport. He also worked at KYOK in Houston. He gave me my first radio job and although I sucked pretty bad, he stuck with me and taught me the ins and out of being a good jock and programmer. He was one of the nicest, most genuine people that I have ever met in this business and he will be sorely missed.
For years he tried to convince Radio owners and managers to go with an Urban Format, however most of them said it would not sell. I guess they were right given the lack of success at KBLZ/KAZE and KISX :
. While at KFRO, he continuously posted number one ratings. RIP my friend. :'(
