Former LA talk Host Tom Leykis does an online show

He'll get rich off of that!

I bet Tom's ultimate dream is to purchase KRTH from CBS Radio so he can call it "Leykis 101!" :D

I ran across an old acquaintance on the Internet the other day who has his own classic rock channel on Live365, with three DJ's operating under him, playing Peter Green Fleetwood Mac and such. It sounds great and looks like fun, but with the cost of music licensing and royalties, is there really any way for an individual to do anything but go in the red like that? A guy like Leykis may have the startup money and the profile to sell ads and be profitable, but for anyone else, is it practical?

Leykis is not exactly a household name so it's hard to imagine even him covering his overhead.

If Leykis gets just 5,000 people to plunk down an annual premium membership of $100 that's $500,000. If Heidi and Frank can get roughly 7,000 people to pay $50 for an annual VIP membership, then I would say that it is entirely within the realm of possibility for Tom to do something similar.

I'm guessing his ad rates are very reasonable compared to terrestrial radio and appealing to someone who wishes to target the Leykis P1 listener. As web radio gains acceptance with media buyers, you can expect those rates to increase as well.

You also need to be a social media dynamo in order to be successful in this arena and Tom has demonstrated his grasp of this, having maintained his fan base throughout his time on the beach via Facebook and Twitter. Follow his tweets on Flash Friday if you want to get an idea.
