Former Morgan Murphy Media CEO Liz Burns Passes Away


Elizabeth Burns was best known for managing Morgan Murphy Media the owners of WISC-TV Madison, KXLY-TV Spokane most notably.

Elizabeth “Liz” Murphy Burns, the longtime President and CEO of the family-run Morgan Murphy Media, has passed away. She was 79.

Burns, whose grandfather founded the Superior Evening Telegraph in 1890, was a third-generation broadcast media executive. She entered the family business at 14 years old, selling classified ads for the paper. After college, she rejoined the family business.

Burns was the first woman elected to the CBS affiliates advisory board, one of the first women elected to the National Association of Broadcasters’ board of directors, and was designated a “Giant of Broadcasting” by the Library of American Broadcasting Foundation.

She served as President/CEO for 43 years before stepping down last month.
