Former Seattle Talent

It used to be that for all my Seattle Radio gossip, this was the place to turn...but over the last few years its gotten really slow around here as most of you just argue about the ratings, and who is going where... I've had to turn to Blatherwatch for most interesting updates, but I can't stand scrolling through the comments....

So, here is something that I found over there a few weeks ago that I'm curious to hear some opinions on, Bryan Suites - after being let go from KVI, soon started cashing in some contacts from his LA days and quickly started doing fill in work in Southern California, for KFI. He is one of only two hosts to be invited back for a repeat stint in the 7-10 weeknight slot. It looks like Bryan's good friend, and also former Seattle radio host "Kennedy" is also trying out for a job at KFI....

Will Bryan stay down in LA, or find his way back here?

I was a big fan of his KIRO show, but didn't listen much on KVI.....

Kennedy: It's hard for a former MTV VJ to get a gig beyond TV infomercials and syndicated radio once they left MTV. Kennedy ("That's it! Your 15 SECONDS of fame are OVER!") was lucky to get her gig on KIRO-FM/KQBZ when she did. I thought she was more talented than many of the hosts they had in the late '90s (save Pat Cashman and Bernie Ward's weekend program.) In spite of Bernie Ward's current allegations, I still believe his program then was one of the best 100.7 FM then had to offer and one of the programs that put 100.7 on my Seattle (FM2) presets on my radio whilst commuting back and forth from Spokane to Seattle in the late '90s when I was living in Eastern Washington.

Got in good when the gas prices weren't as CRAZY as they are now.

I can't believe I'd be nostalgic for the '90s, but damn, I feel nostalgic for 2000 already.

But that's life.....

Suites ran a sloppy show on KVI. Narrow content, self focused (well, most talk show hosts are) and really embarrasing enunciation. That he could land a KFI is indicative of how little talent remains in this business and how cost conscious Clear Channel (KFI ownership) may have become.

He has some great perspective on Iraq and his experiences there give him a platform that few have. To me, it's a shame he didn't capitalize on it more effectively.

I've said it before & will again: I MISS KENNEDY. She was fantastic in Seattle & I'd love to hear her again in our market. Even if she was a lousy Republican. Bummer that we no longer have any kind a station where she would really make sense.

The thing with Suits is he needs direction. That's what he didn't get from Kris Olinger or Dennis Kelly, and you could tell that by listening to his shows. Paul Duckworth did a pretty good job of managing Bryan, then Bryan went back to Iraq.

Give Bryan a good mentor and he can be a good talk show host. Maybe that's what KFI sees in him.

Where is Bryan these days anyway? Is he still on the dial?

I remember when the poor guy got wounded in Iraq, I hope he's bounced back from the wound as well as can be. It's bad enough you have to bring PTSD back with you from a combat zone, the last thing you need on top of it is shrapnel swimming around your body.

KFI is owned by Fisher, or did I miss something?

Kennedy? Ugh. She was terrible. Being a Republican is one thing, but she was an idiot. Gobbled down G.O.P. talking points because they sounded trendy and/or sexy at the time, I guess, who knows. Opposing viewpoints are fine, but please, have a clue as to WHY certain ideologies work for you. She didn't even know who Martin Landau was when she was hosting the premiere of the Mission Impossible film. Good God, give her a talk show right?!

KVI (570 seattle) is owned by Fisher.

KFI (640 LA) is owned by Clear Channel.

Looks like I'll have to eat some crow and humble pie here. Here I am complaining about Kennedy being a lightweight, and I miss the KFI vs. KVI difference! I just figured because it was a Seattle conversation and it was a three-letter station beginning with K and ending in I it was KVI.

I stand corrected, my bad! Thanks for the heads-up!

OK, time for a quick quiz.

Three levels of difficulty. No cheating.

Level 1...What are the only two remaining three letter calls in Seattle?

Level 2...What were the original five after 1936?

Level 3...What was the sixth one that went away in '36?

Answers: 1-KVI, KJR; 2-KVI, KJR, KTW, KXA, KOL;, 3-KVL
OK, now back to things that matter...

KVL as, I have read went on to become KEVR, then KING. Then it all becomes a blur in 1995 (KKNG, KINF, KNWX, KRPM, when call letters changed like the frequency of a cheap ham radio.) Then KMPS, KYCW and finally KPTK.....

That should be, "lately KPTK." Or "most recently KPTK." I doubt KPTK are the final call letters there.

Well, if all else fails, KZOK will still do good on 1090. (I actually hoped for that instead of the KPTK calls they chose, since Infinity Seattle seemed to opt for in-house calls on 1090....)
