Former TV owner turned mayor Frank Melton passes.

In case anyone didn't notice, Frank Melton formerly owner of three TV stations (one in Jackson and two in Texas [Tyler and Lufkin]), one-third of the infamous MRS Ventures radio group and mayor of Jackson has died Wednesday after midnight. Details of his death can be found at www.wlbt.com.

Something I've always been curious about. I saw a news report on WLBT that Melton had come to WLBT after he was hand picked by the NAACP. Shortly after ariving he fired the manager William Dilday who had been its first black manager. I also understand that Frank Melton later bought the station. My question is, What did Frank do before coming to WLBT and how did he make his money? Not too many people have enough money lying around to go out and buy a television station. Most stations theses days are own by large groups instead of individuals.

That's a good question, flytrap. I learned that Frank started his broadcast career as a sportscaster for KTRE before branching out into management and then later ownership. Of all the other things Frank did during his life is well beyond me. I guess that is why Jerry Russell is his right-hand man when they owned up the radio stations in which most are literally ran to the ground and unlistenable.
