Former WBBM Anchor out.

I am sad to say that last week, WTMJ, Milwaukee, fired former WBBM Anchor, Ken Herrera. The station is taking teir morning show in a new direction. He was lowest in seniority.

From TMJ's web site:

Gene Mueller will join "Wisconsin's Morning News" show as co-host with John Jagler on Monday, May 21st. "Wisconsin's Morning News" airs weekdays from 5:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m on Newsradio 620 WTMJ. Jon Schweitzer, 620 WTMJ Senior Vice President/General Manager made the announcement today.

Schweitzer said, "We are fortunate to have the caliber of personality such as Gene Mueller. He has been with our company for a long time so it is great to be able to focus his talents and take advantage of his news credibility on the biggest news station in the state. His passion for Wisconsin sports, news, pop culture, and local events will be a perfect match for WTMJ"

Mueller said, "Having grown up in Southeastern Wisconsin, I know WTMJ Radio's place in people's lives. I'm honored and flattered to be given the chance to be part of a true local resource staffed with professionals who are ready to embrace new traditions while respecting all that makes the station so unique and vital. I'm eager to learn, to use new muscles, and to contribute to a legendary radio station."

Mueller has been a fixture in the Milwaukee radio market for more than 25 years, co-hosting the "Reitman & Mueller" morning show on 94.5 WKTI since 1982. Prior to that, Mueller worked at WQFM as news director and morning show host from 1981-1982; at WSPT AM/FM in Stevens Point as a news reporter from 1977-1981; at WWSP in Stevens Point as campus radio news director from 1975-1977; and at WHBL AM/FM in Sheboygan as a part-time announcer from 1974-1976.

That is ashame. Ken was a great guy, and a great broadcaster.

Tom Cuprisin of the Milwaukee Journal did a column about this last week, which is up on JSOnLine.com, although you may need to register to read it. The story talks about how Ken did not have the chance to say goodbye to the audience and that he thought highly of his tenure in Milwaukee.

Ken mentioned that if he can not find a new radio home in Milwaukee, he will likely look for a PR Position, so he can remain in the area. He felt that such a position would be made easier to come by due to his bilingual skills. I wish him well.
