Former WBNS/Columbus ND Donald J. Smith Dies
Condolences to family and friends of former WBNS-A/COLUMBUS, OH News Director DONALD J. SMITH, who died last TUESDAY at 84, according to the COLUMBUS DISPATCH. SMITH worked in radio in YOUNGSTOWN, OH and in TV news in COLUMBUS before joining WBNS.

Don was a hell of a guy and I'm glad I have some recordings of him. He volunteered for our Reading Service a number of years ago. As I recall, he also used to produce some of the Early Worm Irwin Johnson shows on WBNS. I also lost a good friend of mine Donald Kirk who used to be Gen manager of WCOL in the mid 50s. It's too bad most of the young people don't realize what a public service and comunity voice radio used to be. A friend of mine told me after a recent Mami FL trip that his radioing was a big disappointment. The radio wasn't much different, same jingles, promo packagges, contests, everything sounded like WLW, WTVN, WTAM, Etc. Wonder when people are going to XM and Sirius???????? How long will it be before they start sounding like over the air radio.

I also notice the IBOC radios are hitting the store shelves. I'll be waiting for the prices to take a BIG DROP. Has anyone on this list heard IBOC AM? I understand it sounds like a bad Windows Media feed. It's sure ruined AM dxing!!!!> from all access 4/17
