Dorothy Brunson, a pioneering African-American broadcast executive who once owned WEBB radio (today's WVIE) died on Sunday (7-31).
Brunson owned WEBB from 1979 (when she purchased it from the Godfather of Soul, James Brown) until 1990. With the purchase of WEBB, she became the first Black woman to own an American radio station. Ms. Brunson also owned WGTW-TV in Philadelphia, and worked for many years behind the scenes at New York City's WWRL and Inner City Broadcasting (WLIB/WBLS).
