Former WFLAers beef up Genesis news offerings

Genesis Communications Inc. has added two former WFLA-AM newscasters to its roster.
NewsTalk 1040 WWBA-AM and SportsRadio 1470 WHBO-AM, two of five stations owned by Tampa-based Genesis, have hired Roger P. Schulman and Shayna Lance to anchor and report local news on the stations starting Monday.
Until now, the stations have had no original news reporting and have relied on network feeds, said Brad Page, senior vice president of programming and marketing for the network and general manager of the two Bay area stations. The move falls in line with NewsTalk 1040's commitment to live and local programming, Page said.
The two broadcasters left 970 WFLA-AM on their own accord, said Page, who worked with them during his 20-year tenure at the Clear Channel-owned station.
"This will give us the ability to have local news with the two of them around the clock," he said. "We're committed to staying on local news, and that makes us a better radio station, and I know our advertisers already appreciate it."
In addition to the two Tampa properties, Genesis owns SportsRadio 1080 WHOO-AM and Talk Radio WAMT 1190-AM in Orlando and SportsRadio 1060 WIXC-AM in Melbourne.
Schulman and Lance will be anchoring and reporting local news from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the week on both stations. Lance will serve as news director.
