(Former) WKIX Directional

850 (now WPTK according to the FCC) is non-directional daytime. Perhaps they had an engineering problem and were running reduced power -- or just screwed up and kept the nighttime pattern after sunrise.

In the daytime, WTAR must protect WPTK as 'PTK has been on the 850 frequency much longer (1947 as WNAO; WTAR signed on in 1952 as WCAV). WPTK's current night pattern was a later addition, so that is nulled to protect Norfolk, though WTAR has nulls towards Raleigh day and night.

The automatic pattern change controller at WPTK failed yesterday and the station stayed on night pattern for awhile, until it was fixed. Sorry about that.

WTAR was the call sign for 790 for years. WRAP was 850's old call sign in Norfolk.

'KIX has always been directional at night. Don't know when they redid their towers. Maybe I can find out more on the old vs. new pattern.

The old 850 site was located just east of the I-40/Highway 54 interchange, near the State Fair grounds. The property is now occupied by an office/industrial park.

The current 850 site (near Morrisville) was built in 1983 and put on the air in 1984.

Back when they were doing Oldies I could hear them in Monroe, NC during the day, a good haul. The last time I turned them on some national nutcase was talking about "bed wetting liberals" so I won't have to worry about listening anymore! Really, can we not talk about politics without getting insulting. How about sticking to the issues for a change?
