Former WMT AM Host Greg Alan Responds

Well....reading that link was a colossal waste of three minutes of my life. Who cares? This guy says in one post "I am done with radio" and then posts a self-important, yammering rant about what a screw job he got and how he wasn't treated fairly. To me, there is an art form to bowing out of something gracefully. Mr Allen started and should've kept his mouth shut...THAT would've been graceful. But no, it seems like he NEEDS this soapbox. He CRAVES the attention. I'm sure if mediawatcher isn't Greg Allen, he's a good buddy of his who received a phone call late one night that went a little something like this:

"hey...it's Greg...no, Greg Allen...yeah me. Listen, I just finished working on this kick ass blog for my website. Could you go on radio-info.com and post that there is "breaking" news that I've finally broken my silence and now I'm talking about why I got out of radio! Yeah, make it seem really interesting. Oh yeah, and the part that says "emails are pouring in as to why I left"...that doesn't sound TOO ridiculous does it? I mean, I had two people send in emails, so I guess I could use the term "pouring". Anyway, thanks a lot and maybe we can get together and go grab a Zima soon. Ok....bye."

If you say you're out....stay out. Hypocrisy is so ugly.

The Stick

Stickman...funny stuff about the call. Haven't heard a Zima reference in a long time. What isn't funny...a guy who has a wife and two children losing a job. As fellow broadcasters, I think we would want to know who in the industry treats their employees fair and who doesn't. You say he CRAVES attention and NEEDS his soapbox. Don't most radio people want to be heard? The "emails are pouring in" thing was laughable. I believe if you have to tell someone how good you are, you're probably not that good. One thing about Greg Alan (note the spelling Stick) is he's very good at what he does, unfortunately most people don't want to hear negativity all day. It's unfortunate that this board continues to allow people to post backstabbing, moronic BS about other people. Sure would be nice for all of us to join together and try to help each other get new jobs, warn against bad employers and in general be positive about the business we love. By the way, do you know Greg personally or ever met him? I'm sure you wouldn't want people who didn't know you to talk about you. It's always easy to kick a man when he's down. I guess you have to ask yourself before the next post..."is what i'm writing helping or hurting". Sounds corny, but you always look and feel better when you take the high road. Most of us have lost a job at least one job in the past and have been pissed off at our former employer...ALWAYS remember that feeling before your next post.

I think WMT blew a big chance to build a new audience. Greg was very good at what he did and should be proud of the morning show. He was rather abrasive at first, but that evened out over time. He was a shock compared to Tim Boyle- but even Tim was not what he once was during the 80s (remember his Slim Whitman and Mother Theresa ad for the Iowa Lottery "cause your chances of winning are Slim and Nun"?). It's the nature of the biz, I suppose, Tim bumped Gary Edwards (who went on vacation and came back to find out in the Gazette that he was unemployed).

Tom Collins has a nice enough voice, but does not do well at interviews (Tim and Greg both hosted the 9 oclock interview hour, now Jim Doyne does it) and relies on the fillers too much. Oh and repeating the time "It's six fifteen, fifteen after six " gets really annoying after a short time.

As for the WMT web site Greg is correct. The pages have not been regularly updated and it completely ignores the two guys with the longest tenure- (Jim Doyne 30+ years and Leo Greco with over 60 years on the station in one way or another).

It's good to have Bob back and he is somewhat of a rarity for the station. Usually the afternoon drive was the domain of the PD. Joe Martel, Rick Sellers ran that shift for many years.
