Former WPOP Studios in Newington demolished

I doubt that the building is being demolished but I'll take a ride over there and check on it later today. The building in question dates back to 1936 when the station was WNBC (New Britain Connecticut, not National Broadcasting Company.) The building still houses the xmtr and I don't see any applications on file with the FCC to move the xmtr and/or the towers.

The studios and offices from it's Top Forty format in the 60's and 70's were a pre-fab building placed in front of the brick xmtr building. That pre-fab was dismantled and sold when Rt 175 was widened sometime in the early 80's (I think.) WPOP then moved to new studios about 3 miles east of the xmtr.

The land surrounding the xmtr building is all wetlands with a stream flowing between the two towers. If anyone like CCSU wanted to build something on that land they would face some serious environmental issues. And I haven't heard anything about that.

If the building is being torn down the crew would be in for a shock, literally, as the power is still connected.

How sad.I tuned in in the mid 1970's when it was top 40.I got some airchecks here but not much of WPOP.I used too flip between WPOP,WAVZ,WNBC,WDRC AM-FM and some others back then.I was thinking of this happening a few years ago with the old WIOF building in Prospect .I was so happy to see it still standing as I found it on Google maps and made a trip over to Prospect last February and this past summer with the snap shots in the WIOF Building thread. What a loss. To bad they cant reuse the building in the expansion. They can name it "The WPOP wing" .

WPOP received approval from the town to remove the old concrete pad that the pre-fab used to sit on, and erect a 10x20 building for the transmitters. This was in August. The minutes regarding the approval state an interest in maintaining the existing building, but that may have come down as well due to its age. WPOP is not, in fact, vacating the site.

Drove by the building Monday, the letters are gone and there is a fence around the building. What is the current status, is it still being demolished? Are the towers still active?
