Former WSB-TV Anchor/News Director

Ray Moore, who was the news director and an anchor on WSB-TV from the early 1950's until the 1980's, has died at age 91. He was popular on the most watched Atlanta TV newscast in his era.

hes was first on WAGA tv five (5) then he moved to Ch 2. He was a news mans news man few can fill hes shoes . others remeber any other.

Ray Moore was legendary among Atlanta TV news people. Ray and his staff kept the #1 slot
in all TV ratings for many years. Ray was responsible for giving Tom Brokaw the major market
break Tom needed....and the rest is history. Ray was a wonderful person to know and to have in
the newsroom. A genuine person, so well respected by all who knew him and for all of us who were
so fortunate to work with him. Ray, Hal Suit, Tom Brokaw and so many others on Channel 2 who
commanded the market in the 1960's.

I worked with Ray Moore on a project while I worked for the State of Georgia, and he was with, I think it was GSU, maybe Emory. Anyway, it was an honor. Very gracious. Certainly a memorable point in my career.

He was the subject of the very first "Young Man on the Go" series in ATLANTA Magazine when it debuted in 1960. In his piece he told the story of how he was hired as an announcer doing TOH station id's for Channel 2. To reassure himself, he wrote "WSB-TV, Atlanta" on a 3 x 5 card before he went into the booth. In there, the director gave him the cue, and he said, "WSM, Atlanta." Panic in the control room. But he intended to redeem himself, and at the half hour, glared at the card, got the cue and proudly said, "WSM, Atlanta."

Somehow Don Elliott Heald, who was GM at the time, thought it was funny and kept him on.

I had to start an account just to comment here. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Ray. He was one of the owners of WLBB in Carrollton when I was news director there 30 years ago. He was a wonderful human and teacher. I was clearly an idiot who had no clue what he was doing, but Ray helped me out several times. He was encouraging and kind. A really wonderful talent and man. He will be missed.

One of the first newscasters I remember . He was not flashy, excellent reporter. Certainly would not be an anchor by today's cosmetic look requirements. I remember when he returned to the air doing mid days in the early 2000's . It was great to see a real pro on the air.
