Formula One and Speed to part ways after this year

The rumor is F1 is about to do a deal with NBCU. Sources at Fox confirm that they were outbid for the next F1 contract and will stop airing races after the end of this year. This also feeds the rumor that they're going to rebrand SPEED to an all-sports channel down the road.

If NBCSN gets F1, it's nothing but good for them. The faster they can start programming 24/7 and kill the overnight infomercial dependence, the better. Since F1 is pretty much an overnight-to-early morning circuit most of the year in the US, it'll be good for them, and since they don't do the NHL on Sundays, replays are an easy possibility to allow the awake to watch unlike Speed, which has a post-pre-post-post-pre-race show for every NASCAR event...or godawful reality shows ::).

It also gives me hope that MAVTV is being set up to be a true motorsports network; ever since Lucas Oil bought it and threw off all the lowball and bikini crap, they've developed into a much better network. Expect Lucas to pretty much remove their Speed content in the next year too. The NHRA could use a new home too because of how ESPN2 pretty much treats it as easily removable filler if an event runs overtime.

The poster here who predicted that SPEED would evolve into the Fox National Sports Channel
was on target, it seems.

It's official! F1 goes to NBC Sports Group for the next four years. Includes streaming as well as broadcast and cable. Should be good news for F1 fans.

"Good news?" I guess.....for both of them.

F1 has never had a mass audience in the USA since the Watkins Glen races of the 70's. And the "mass" was pretty small even back then.

NASCAR has seen a huge drop in track and viewer attendance the past few years. This has been blamed primarily on cost of attendance (tracks) and boring racing (viewers). I agree with both reasons and have virtually quit watching all but a very few races each year.

On both items F1 is worse than NASCAR. The starting order generally determines the finish unless the leader is punted out of the way or suffers a mechanical failure. Passing is all but forgotten. And the cost of attendance is preposterous for the average race fan. F1 attracts only the very well-heeled which makes it about as popular as polo.

NBC keeps adding to its troubles it seems with the signage of events such as this which are likely to cost them a pretty penny but which won't return a reasonable ROE. More money down the toilet IMHO.

NASCAR viewership is roughly neutral or up slightly on TNT and ESPN. But you're right, viewership for races on FOX was down quite a bit this year. To me, that's more of a criticism of FOX than NASCAR.

I believe that prediction of speed going to be Fox Sports1 was made by me , and I still stand by it

I'll go along with that ..ESPECIALLY and i'll add also since FSP (Fox Soccer Plus) airs most of everything that is aussie (rugby , Aussie Footy) I can see an american Fox Sports 1,2,3
