Forrest Compton, who played Col. Edward Gray on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.

He was good. I remember when Gomer pulled a gun on a senator and Col. Gray told him to go back to Washington and tell him not even a senator cannot get on the base without proper authorization.
 
Also, he was the star of the soap "The edge of Night" in its later years. My mother watched the CBS soaps but I think by the time he was on the show it had moved to ABC. He took over the role from someone else.
