Fort Walton Beach / Destin

Do any stations in the Fort Walton area have a history of flipping to Christmas Music during the holidays?

Also, Which station is preparing for a flip to Classic Rock?

Classic Rock coming to Fort Walton Beach?

Since no one bit on this question, I'll elaborate.

I was driving through FWB last week and there was a newly painted van in the Sports Radio 98.1 parking lot that said "K-Rock, The Classic Rock Station". The strange thing is that it didn't list a frequency.

No Classic Rock station exists in the FWB market (yet) and I don't believe that group (Gulf Breeze Media?) owns stations in any other market. Therefore, there must be a new station or format flip on the way, right? With Christmas on our doorstep, I wouldn't be surpised to see someone stunt with Christmas songs before a flip to Classic Rock. How long do you keep a new van around before launching a format?

Does anyone here know anything?

Ok here's the deal. Gulf Breeze (Ron Hale) is the former owner of 92.1 K-Rock. When he sold it to Qantum they flipped it to Rhythmic CHR Fly 92-1 so that it wouldn't compete with Wave 102.1. Now the belief is that Ron will bring back the K-Rock format when he assumes control of 105.5.

If you are wondering how Ron is getting 105.5 here's the explanation:
Ron & Cumulus made a swap deal. He's swapping 93.3/Evergreen, AL and 98.1 for Cumulus's 100.3 and 105.5. Not sure when that deal is going to be complete.

So, the reason there is no frequency is because maybe he hasn't decided whether he's going to do K-Rock on 100.3 or 105.5 yet.

Would it make sense to flip sports to the 105.5 or 100.3 Frequency and do something like Classic Rock on 98.1? I mean, 98.1 is a big ol' blowtorch signal just sitting out there waiting to dominate and sports radio just doesn't seem to do it. 98.1's signal also appears to be stronger in Destin/ FWB nowadays too. If you flip 98.1, that leaves P'cola without sports radio. But, I'm not sure just how big a hole that would be though.

Once the frequency swap is done, Cumulus will own 98.1 which is where they are moving the country format from 105.5 to. They are moving the AC format on 100.3 to 93.3. Then 100.3 would become Sports and 105.5 would be classic rock according to the rumors.

However, interesting twist.... I was just told by someone kinda in the know that the Ron Hale/Cumulus swap wasn't happening after all and that Ron was in a bunch of legal trouble now. I have no way to confirm that so I want to make it CLEAR that I dont know if thats true but it doesnt surprise me if it is.<P ID="signature">______________

You heard right. The whole mess is tied up in court.

<blockquote><font face="verdana" size="2" color="330066">"Qantum is moving forward with the second part of its case, asking the court to force the sale of the station to Qantum. O'Sullivan also did not dismiss the possibility of filing for sanctions against Hale. He declined to elaborate.

"We're certainly going to pursue any remedies available to us in connection with the testimony and the documents," he said."</font></blockquote>

Mick J-
Don't know who you are but that was an EXCELLENT find. I worked at Qantum (for Fly 92-1 aka WWRK) and followed this case as close as I could to try and understand it and nothing made more sense than this article.
Thanks !!

I'm really glad to know my info wasn't bad. I don't like to call anyone shady on here unless I know it for fact.<P ID="signature">______________

Screwed up status of FWB stations

The article mentions nothing about WPGG. Does Star have the funds to get this station on the air in the FWB market without help from Cumulus or has the move been put on hold? Can Cumulus go through with it's purchase of WPGG and leave WTKE on the table for later?

It would actually be cool for Quantum to get their hands on WTKE... that would give them the chance to move Wave 102 over to a stronger signal closer to Pensacola and get higher ratings.

In an unrelated case... it seems as though the owners/opperators of Fort Walton's other 100kw station, WAAZ 104.7, may be getting to old to stay in the game. Are there ever any roumors of a possible sale or move of this station?

I've always though it was strange that Clear Channel moved WBUV out of the Mobile market into the much smaller Biloxi market at the same time WAAZ upgraded from 50kw to 100kw. Coincidence or conspiracy?

Re: Classic Rock coming to Fort Walton Beach?

BH:

Does anyone know if Ron O. Hale actually completed the purchase of WMMK from
the previous owner Tim Fulmer? If Fulmer got all of his money, I would be shocked. I just wonder if Hale gave him a piece of the current "action" to buy more time. The bankruptcy thing was apparent years ago, although I'd say I'd be
surprised he forced it to try to stop the Qantum sale ONLY. Qantum claims
Hale provided false sales info? Really? I'd pay $5M for that double deck
bus, wouldn't you? It's all really just be a magic carpet ride.

Twenty years later, WTKE is still a nightmare for everyone involved.

Radio on the Gulf Coast. You gotta miss it. I cringe just thinking about it.

The good ol' days of Destin's 92.1

Gulf Breeze Media tried to sell me advertising on 92.1 for several years. My memory is a little foggy, but I'd guess it was from 1997-2002. The problem was that my customers couldn't pick up the station because it died out around Navarre. I told their sales guy that they didn't serve my customer base and I had no reason to consider advertising on their station... they kept coming back for more. Idiots. Even though 92.1 was owned (or run) by a company called Gulf Breeze Media their signal didn't cover Gulf Breeze, Florida at all. I always assumed that they were trying to use the name Gulf Breeze Media to convince advertisers that they were putting adds into the larger Pensacola market instead of only the FWB Market.

I can remember reading a post last year were the moderator of this borad mentioned going bankrupt over a station in Fort Walton.

Is the FWB radio market so corrupt that it NEEDS Cumulus and Clear Channel to take it over?

Re: The good ol' days of Destin's 92.1

Way over radioed -

Years ago the problem was Tom Birch at WWAV.

Just almost impossible to do well there
makes it dog eat dog, tell 'em anything, etc.
Bet the rates were next to nothing for you.
I remember ads as low as 97 cents in PCB.

Best station/person to deal with that has
the most integrity is Mark Carter at Seabreeze.
Great guy, honest to a fault and stays away from
the problem side of the business.

How Hale has stayed in a small town with
the IRS on him, bankruptcy and a horrible rep
is beyond me.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by tibbs on 11/28/05 02:40 PM.</FONT></P>

Re: Classic Rock coming to Fort Walton Beach?

you wrote: "98.1's signal also appears to be stronger in Destin/ FWB nowadays too"

The reason they "seem" stronger in Destin and FWB is that the transmitter site was moved quite a while ago from Escambia Farms (near the AL border northwest of Crestview) to a 500 ft tower in downtown Fort Walton just south of Hollywood Ave.....near the Cumulus studios.
