Fort Walton changes

Community Broadcasters just sold their 4 station Fort Walton-Destin cluster to their sister company JVC.

Crestview Broadcasting recently signed on a new translator for their AM, WJSB. Theoretically that could mean 100kw WAAZ is now for sale.

Is Fort Walton in for a big shakeup in 2021?

I doubt there will be anything major going on in Ft. Walton. I seem to remember hearing it’s an incredibly low revenue market, and that was before COVID hit.

It is, however, good news that a programming centric company like JVC is involved (or staying involved). I don’t always like the company’s programming decisions, but the people running it have programming backgrounds when most broadcasting companies are run by salespeople.

Fort Walton doesn’t seem like a big money market.
I’ve always wondered how Cumulus supported all those local DJs.
Any ideas?

I'm guessing you’re being sarcastic as they haven’t had much of a local presence at all over the last 10 years.

A couple of friends and former co-workers from my time at Cumulus have transferred there. One, I believe, lost her job there in the massive bloodlettings of 08-09 while the other moved there more recently. From talking to him, it sounds like he spends a lot of time in Pensacola, too. Plus, he wears several hats. We were going to get together at Hub Stacey's one afternoon when the now ex-wife and I were on a Florida trip about three years ago, but he had too much going on and had to cancel.

With corporate restructing. Both markets share resources. I think one FM station in Pensacola has live (local VT) talent and the N/T AM has a live morning show. No sure about Ft. Walton beach, but I would speculate it is run with a minimal staff.

Mobile gets the staff and resources for obvious reasons, and probably looks out for the Pensacola FWB market.

IHeart does the same thing for Pensacola. I think most operations are run out of Mobile too.
