aircheck of day 1 eagle 98.1 1995.. tape 1..morning news followed by garth brooks as dj announces the new country 98.1...outro into liner about music no longer on the radio..into??? tape cuts off :(

aircheck day 1 music includes james taylor, hall and oates, paul macartney, elton john.and survivor. eagle 98.1 all rock and roll oldies specialing in music from the 70s! they started out as classic hits. they should have stayed with that format!! hard to believe that was 11 years ago!!

I thought the old WAFB_FM stayed as some type of rock/ top 40 format. When was the country stunt done? ??? Does the air check post date its incarnation as Z-98? ???

no the morning they flipped to eagle 98.1 they played garth as a joke because everyone was speculating they were going country. it was just the one song. but i got it on tape :)...i was shoked when i heard it as it happened because they had played classic hits all night from like 11pm to 4:30 am before going back into oldies. oh and garth wasnt around in 1984 :)

If I remember they were z-98 rock/top 40 before becoming oldies in 1990-1991? as Oldies 98.1 before flipping classic rock/new rock as Eagle 98.1 before taking all new rock off in 1999 (about 3 months after WCKW's flip)

But Garth Brooks was being played hard in 1994 ;) actually if you consider his "Chris Gaines" persona, the fact he did Kiss and Little feat covers, and the fact that one of his hits was written by half of Aerosmith, Can we now consider him classic hits too ;D

the continuing history of 98.1

98 wafb hit format early 70s
stereo 98 --1978/79--disco
98 wafb 80-84 pop
84-z 98 wggz rock hits
85-89 z98 wggz chr
90-94 oldies as oldies 98.1
95--eagle 98.1 arrow format with focous on the 70s..no new rock!
96-98 classic rock eagle 98.1.
99-00 briefly mainstream rock
01-present classic rock eagle 98.1

as best i can remember thats the historyt of wafb/wggz/wdgl..weirdo if you are reading this how close am i??
but those 2 sources arent exactly right sometimes..

.

this is wrong:

In 1995, 98.1 flipped to mainstream rock as "Eagle 98.1". The station would eventually segue into classic rock with a softer lean than the usual classic rock station. When Rock 93.7 came around, they took many potshots at Eagle for this. However, Eagle seems to stay stubborn in their ways, despite Rock closing in fast in ratings & revenue.

they did not debut as a mainstream rocker. i have a new found tape to prove it :)..hall and oates was not mainstream rock..neither was james taylor :) or the little river band..

Pretty damn accurate as far as I can tell...I was outta B.R. from 'FMF to 'RNO spring '83...so you're more accurate than I could ever be... ;D

"Rock closing in fast in ratings and revenue..."

That's a laugh!

Don't know about closing in fast as I think at the high point Rock 93.7 was I think 2.5-3 points behind Eagle 98.1

But Rock 93.7 actually lasted 2 1/2 years.. about average for a station that comes , tries out in the market and then flips to something else....

I thought it was variety hits to classic hits.. It' has more of a classic hit feel to me personally right now than when they atarted.. But I see more newer rock on here too.. looks like they are trying to adjust some more I see?

i listened today. seems red is rock 40 now. the old adult rock format from the 80s. it all seems to be rock based hits. i heard no slow elton john today. no disco. and i heard a lot of newer rock. mixed with the top 40 rock of the 70s 80s and 90s. oh and in case anyone doesnt know back in the 80s rock stations played a-ha, crowded house and even dexys midnight runners.
